SUPERGIRL SURVIVE #4: Vacation’s Over.

Kara and Kal are on a beautiful planet ripe with plant life and have discovered that yellow suns grant them abilities beyond their wildest imagination. Their search for Earth and for freedom from pursuit brings them together with an unlikely ally and a familiar face.

The Story:

No matter what Kara does, she cannot seem to catch a break as Griffin and Ethan inch us closer and closer to their ultimate goal of Earth. If you’ve read another title from DC Comics this week, then Braniac 5 has made his entry in more ways than one, bringing this story closer together with Legion of Superheroes, where we saw Braniac 1! As to whether this will be crossing over with that epic new adventure remains to be seen, but for the first time, Kara and Kal seem to have caught a break. I love that the two bond as Kara develops her abilities and his with the help of the yellow sun the duo have found. Their bond has become endearing, and their struggles at times feel like our own. The way the duo has written Kara relates in many ways to things that we can find ourselves facing in real life, which makes her feel so much more human and relatable. This issue introduces the Phantom Zone concept and Mother Boxes, so while life is good for now, it may not stay that way soon, keeping us on the edge of our seats.

The Art:

I will forever be impressed with Rod’s art style during this run, and this issue has been peak beauty. At times, the panels feel as though they are done with watercolors and emphasize the dramatic elements our Super Orphans are facing. I love the way the sun blends in with the sky and how it washes over Kara as she is feeling happiness for the first time in a while. There’s such a uniqueness to the purples, greens, reds, and blues that stand out from the panels, catching my eye, and you’ll want to take in every ounce of detail this art has to offer. The detail in the designs and colors feels hopeful for the first time in a while, matching the tone and remaining inventive.

Final Thoughts:

Kara has finally felt a glimmer of hope for the first time since her planet exploded in Supergirl Survive #4. The artwork is gorgeous and washes over us in a warm and inviting manner while Griffin and Ethan drop hints of warnings and tie in other stories elegantly.
