The Story
There’s a new team of kid metahumans and they are already making their presence known. In Teen Titans #1, we see a group of young familiar faces come together in their own version of the Teen Titans. That group includes Cheshire Cat, Proxy, Wildcard, and my personal favorite, Fairplay. These superpowered teens have created an online server where kids their ages can talk and socialize, but one of their friends have gone missing. This was brought to their attention by the Red Hood, who was already on the case. Whether Red Hood agrees with them or not, the teens will not stop until they find their friend.
This was such a fun comic to dive into. Kyle Higgins brings all the excitement of the Teen Titans with a new and fresh energy with its team members. This version feels so exciting and is the perfect group of kids to carry on the mantle of the Teen Titans. What I loved about the story was that the meta teenagers were very stuck on the idea of not becoming the new Teen Titans, but to be what the Teen Titans stood for. It’s different, it’s interesting, and it shows that they’re more than worthy to carry on the mantle. What makes it even more interesting is having them led by Red Hood, who has been more than against the idea of being a mentor. The dynamics are already interesting, so I’m excited to see these youngsters grow into a true team.
The Art
The artwork of Teen Titans #1 matches the excitement and tone of the story excellently. Daniele Di Nicuolo, Marcelo Costa, and Becca Carey do a fantastic job when bringing their own talents to the comic. Di Nicuolo brings an anime energy to the story that perfectly fits the characters and does a great job of highlighting the action, making it feel larger than life. Costa handles the colors, and I can’t explain how much I loved the vibrancy of the comic. With the characters being so young, I feel the bright colors really capture the youthful spirit of the story. Carey lends their talents to the lettering and always delivers high-quality work. This is no exception, as Carey wonderfully captures the teens’ energy through their dialogue while nailing Red Hood’s more serious tones. Together, the artists made this already exceptional story even more exciting.
Final Thoughts
Teen Titans #1 was such a strong start to this series! I was already excited given the lineup of the new team, but this issue has me very excited to see what’s next!
