Following the events of the recent Supernatural comic from Dynamite Entertainment, which ran for 10 issues, WAYWARD continues on the road so far with the Winchester brothers. While the events of the last comic were referenced, Supernatural fans won’t need to read all 10 issues to enjoy this new “monster of the week.”

The Story for SUPERNATURAL Special: WAYWARD
We’re in the early days of “saving people, hunting things,” and the boys are still processing what the hell happened to them in the recent Supernatural run from Greg Pak. We kick off this issue with a shocking moment between the boys, then quickly cut to “48 hours earlier.” They’re already on to the next case. While it seems like this is gonna be a milk run, even for these season 1 hunters, nothing ever seems to work out that way. Weird calls to Sam are weighing on him. As Dean tells him it’s no big deal, suddenly there’s much more going on than either of them realizes. Their milk run has turned into anything but.
The Art
Right away, the art sucks you in. Our unexpected moment between the boys is highlighted in action and beautiful colors. The art gives an old-school comic book feel while still having some fun details, including an Easter Egg for the character Soldier Boy in The Boys. Jensen Ackles played both Dean Winchester and Soldier Boy. We also get some fun expressions between the boys, showcasing feelings that only siblings can truly convey.
Final Thoughts
With Supernatural having ended almost 6 years ago, it’s always fun to step back into this world, and SUPERNATURAL SPECIAL: Wayward #1 was a great way to do just that. A new case, a new mystery, and the Winchester boys we love. What’s not to be excited for? I especially loved that we got a callout to a beloved character, and Dean expressed his feelings about not currently being able to drive his 1967 Chevy Impala. Affectionately referred to as “Baby”. Anyone who has watched the show knows he never takes that well. Rightfully so. I can’t wait to see this story expand in the upcoming solo series for Sam and Dean.
Overall Grade: 8.5/10
If you get excited the second you hear, “CARRY ON MY WAYWORD SON!!!” Then this is a comic for you! Grab some pie, and your demon hunting blade, and follow along on this new road so far.
