The Story

The fight between the world and the Brutal Dark has taken to the skies! Ezra finds himself hanging off a blimp that’s looming over New York. Taking this fight to a whole new level, Ezra is in the most dangerous position he could possibly be in. When he finally finds some kind of safety after climbing into the blimp, he’s immediately met with the villains, who have every intention on killing him. That’s when the big plan is revealed and Ezra finds himself in the middle of a terrorist attack!

The Peril of the Brutal Dark gets more and more compelling with every issue that comes out. Chris Condon is holding no punches when it comes to the excitement of this story. With the fifth issue, the stakes are higher than ever and we finally get to see the magnitude of the threat that Ezra is facing. This isn’t just any small time villains, this is a worldwide organization that is on the hunt for violence and devastation.

The buildup to this issue was nothing short of genius. We’ve gotten hints here and there at how big this organization is and we finally see some of their plan in this issue. Now we see that their goal is a global war, and the only person that can help is Ezra Cain. Absolutely fantastic work by Condon, who is handling this comic run brilliantly!

The Art

The Peril of the Brutal Dark: An Ezra Cain Mystery #5 is definitely more art-driven rather than with dialogue. Jacob Phillips allows the emotions of the characters to do the storytelling, as their emotions are worn on their sleeves. Ezra’s heightened emotions throughout the story are felt in a huge way by everything from his body language to his facial expressions. Along with the excellent emotions felt throughout the comic, the colors are handled masterfully. This is easily the most vibrant issue yet, and rightfully so. The bright reds and oranges put the reader on constant alert for danger. There’s not one point in this issue that Ezra isn’t in danger, and that high intensity is felt throughout the comic through the artwork.

Final Thoughts

I am having so much fun with The Peril of the Brutal Dark! With each issue, the stakes get higher and the intensity grows more and more. In this issue, it’s all gas and no breaks!

Overall Grade – 9.5/10
