The Story
I love Ryan North’s direction with Wally and this story. There is so much real world application within the writing and he intertwines scientific explanations into the superhero world. North is testing out Wally’s new ability to see the future in small bursts and the way he activates his powers is flexing his pecks. It’s the perfect blend of humor as we get a lesson each time.
There is a terrific spread where Wally is seeing all of the possible outcomes of his plea to Grodd that makes for a clever choose your own adventure story. If you follow the lightning bolts we see Wally use variations of a plan to appeal to Grodd and each one ends up with something ridiculous happening. Teaming Wally up with Mr. Terrific as well, is clever as North can have a scientific explanation in a smart way that the audience can also understand. I’m having so much fun with this issue and run since North took over I can’t wait to see what’s next.
The Art
Guidry and Lucas continue to showcase fun ways to show off Wally’s speed and abilities. Having him zoom away from the scene leaves a burst of colors exploding from one panel to the next. I love how they manage to have Wally encompass multiple panels without the page feeling too crowded or the sizing being off at all. The spread where we choose our own adventure the add of little lightning bolts ensures the audience can follow what is happening without the spread becoming convoluted. There are some excellent artistic decisions with this issue and the risks pay off beautifully!
Final Thoughts
The Flash #34 takes us to school and we go along for a fun scientific experiment. Teaming up Terrific with Flash has so much fun and real world science added to it. Who said comics can’t educate people?
Overall Grade: 9.5/10 futuristic outcomes!
