BIZARRO YEAR NONE #2: Superman’s Credo!

Published:

Up is down and left is right in this alternate world Jimmy and Perry have found themselves trapped in. While Jimmy has become Editor-in-Chief, not all is peachy, as Bizarro Superman is always watching. It’s up to Perry White to hit the beat and not mess up the coffee runs if the duo hope to escape this weird world.

The Story:

Don’t let the bright colors and the goofy speech fool you; Smith and Carrasco are pitching a sinister, unsettling run, and issue 2 takes flight into its mysterious aspects. I love how the duo is scripting everything as the opposite, and it all feels familiar. While we know these are not “our” characters, we are familiar with characters such as Lois Lane, who is the ace reporter in this world as well. Having Jimmy be EIC and Perry back on the streets is allowing both these characters to live in one another’s shoes, and their chemistry is working well. Perry is the coffee runner and messes it up, which is breaking through his hard exterior. There’s a moment where the two offer advice to one another, and it’s a fun moment in an otherwise tense issue. Things take a sinister tone, as I mentioned, because we come to find out that this Lois Lane is not the first version that has been made by this Superman..

The Art:

The uncomfortable style of artistry is what makes this run feel just grotesque and uncomfortable. There are periods where it seems Superman’s eye or face is melting, and the shading and coloring by Garland gives his skin a clay-like texture. Meanwhile, Nick’s close-up shots of these characters are making this run stand out, but are also gross at the same time. The detailing in Superman’s toddler-like mouth, for example, is vomit-inducing, and then we get close-up shots of Jimmy’s hands, which show an insane level of detailing. I know lettering often goes unsung, but Dave’s ability to capture the backwards text and speech deserves high praise, as it gives life and showcases how off everything about this world is.

Final Thoughts:

Bizarro Year None #2 begins to unfold this twisted mystery and reveals that, despite wearing the “S,” this Superman may not be the hero of this story. I love seeing Perry and Jimmy team up, and the art makes me feel so uncomfortable, as it should in this universe.
