Children of Eternal Night

Issue three of this new series from Image Comics is picking up the pace in terms of storyline! The earlier two issues have given clues to this series being within the world of its sister series, Lost Fantasy. Readers now get to see how these two series ties together, and man is it good!

Our main character, Aaron, is still fumbling around with the finer details of this newly obtained power from a dragon egg. After using its power in some sketchy situations, it is still clear that Aaron does not understand the power he holds. So, he goes to the one who brought this power to him. Class is now in session!

It is during this portion of the story that readers finally see how Fireborn and Lost Fantasy come together within the same realm! Readers along with Aaron learn the backstory of the mysterious dragon egg! This is so entertaining to witness! If there are any Fourth Wing readers reading Fireborn, you will see that their stories are mildly similar.

Naturally hearing a story as outlandish as Lost Fantasy and the “Hunter” families would have you questioning everything you know. Aaron is doing just that within this issue! But then Aaron becomes a little “too big for his britches.” There is a new faction in town, the Children of Eternal Night, and they are after the dragon egg.

Aaron got a taste of the dragon egg’s power but does not fully know its full abilities, the egg tells him so! This is when a battle ensues between Aaron and the Children of Eternal Night. Readers are going to love the artwork within these battle panels! This third issue takes readers right to the “lift hill” of this enticing roller coaster!

The Writing

Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas are working towards becoming this industry’s next dynamic duo! The work they are doing on Lost Fantasy alongside Fireborn is amazing. This story continues to bring elements of mystery, drama and action. These two writers combine all three of those elements into beautifully woven story that is growing exceedingly fast with every issue. Finally giving readers, the connection between Fireborn and Lost Fantasy is going to bring more readers to both stories, mark my words! Every issue of this series has flowed so smoothly making this an entertaining and easy to follow story!

The Artwork

Patrick Mulholland and Mark Dale do not disappoint providing readers with bright, vivid and “in your face” art that brings this story to life! The artistic display of the introduction of the “Hunter Families” and the Dragon Eggs is displayed as if it was coming out of a history book. Which is so fitting because of its historical remanence within the story. The next portion of mesmerizing art comes during the fighting at the end of this issue. Such beautiful splash pages combined with vividly bright background coloration. This helps to “highlight” the characters fighting within the panels or pages. Phenomenal job!

Micah Myers‘s lettering for this is amazing as well! There is a lot of dialogue and narration within this issue! You try telling the history of two factions with little to no words! Micah places every chat bubble perfectly while making the font big enough to read, yet small enough to not take away from the art in the panels. Great work!

Final Thoughts

“Now let the fun begin!” Fans finally get the full explanation of the connection between Fireborn and Lost Fantasy! Bringing these two dynamic stories together to cement their place within the comic book landscape. This is an entertaining issue that provides readers with a beautiful but tragic history between the Five Families and the Dragons. I got the sense of Fourth Wing vibes but on a vigilante level! This is just the third issue of this series, so you have not missed out on much at this point. Do yourself a favor and get all three issues of this story and add this title to your pull list!
