What If…the Symbiote chose another? What if The Mighty Thor were given the power of the Symbiote? That is the question at the heart of this edition of What If…? Would Thor be even mightier? What dark magics may await a pairing of the God of Thunder and the Symbiote?

Writing

Torunn Grøbekk had me rolling laughing this issue. Loki’s response to Thor’s symbiote armor is some of the funniest writing I’ve read in a comic. On top of the humor, this story took a turn I did not see coming. Not only does Grøbekk ask us to consider what would happen if Thor were influenced by the symbiote, but also what would happen if the symbiote were influenced by Thor?

This leads to a really enjoyable and well-written story that looks at Thor’s struggle to understand the symbiote and the symbiote’s struggle to understand the raw power it has attached itself to. Grøbekk crafts a Thor story unlike any we have ever seen. In doing so, the story also gives us a different symbiote story than we have seen.

Sergio Fernández Dávila, Aure Jimenez, and Bryan Valenza did a really awesome job with this issue. I have to start with Fernández Dávila and the symbiote suit that was designed for Thor. Not only was it amazing to look at, it led to some of the best jokes in the issue. Aure Jimenez inked this story perfectly. There may be no better story for an inker to shine than one that contains a symbiote, and Jimenez killed it, adding the perfect shadows and darkness to the issue.

Bryan Valenza contributes to the mood with a really impressive bit of coloring. The darker colors of the symbiote and this story really allowed Valenza to craft some scenes that pop with color.

Final Thoughts

This was another fun and interesting entry into the What If series. It’s always fun to take a look at hypotheticals and what else may have happened in a story. This issue provides essentially two different stories for the price of one.

Overall Grade: 9 / 10
