The Exciting Motor City Comic-Con Extravaganza!

Published:

Over the course of May 15th to the 17th, the Vibe Credit Union Showplace in Novi, MI held their biannual Motor City Comic-Con event, the second coming this November! The pop culture convention is the largest in Michigan, housing a wide variety of celebrities, cosplayers, comic creators and vendors. To give a bit of example of who they bring, the event had the likes of Stephanie Phillips, Scott Snyder, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, and Stephanie Sheh, just to name a few.

For both Anthony Ellmer and I, this was our first ever comic-con, so we thought it would be fun to recount our experience! Come join us as we explore the world of the convention together. All of this while giving you a taste of just what Motor City Comic-Con has to offer!

Cosplayers Galore!

Anthony: Getting to experience my first con was truly a special moment. I’ve wanted to go for so long and it really didn’t disappoint. The cosplays were some of the best I’ve ever seen, so of course I had to grab a ton of different pictures with as many of them as I could. The range of characters was awesome to see, from comics to TV shows, movies, video games and anime. Some of the standouts for me were a large group of Warhammer cosplayers. It was like they were ripped straight out of Darktide or Space Marines! Or the massive Darth Vader who was dang near a foot taller than me. I could go on and on about them all. They were so well made, you could really see the passion. It was incredibly inspiring.

Edalyn: My first ever convention was everything I ever hoped it would be. As someone that’s always wanted to try her hand at cosplay but has never quite had the time or money, seeing everyone else in theirs was truly awe inspiring! Among my favorites were this gorgeous, comic-accurate Emma Frost, a spectacular looking Rogue and this beautiful older woman going as the Mistress of the Dark herself, Elvira. Like Anthony said, every single one was so well made, and you could see the love people have for their fandoms. Seeing everyone really pushed me to just go for it however I can and share in the love in a whole other avenue. Which is really the point of cosplays and conventions, right? Sharing the love with others who love the fandoms just as much as you.

Vendor Machine with Perfect Product

Anthony: I was able to meet so many wonderful vendors and artists, buying a ton of artwork, clothes and toys! From posters to shirts, even a battle axe here and there, all of them are truly talented people. There was a gorgeous Batman Beyond poster that I just couldn’t say no to. There were prop guns and weapons from every fictional universe you could think of. From action figures and Funko pops, to comic books, you name it and you can find it!

Edalyn: If you think “oh, I’m a horror fan, there won’t be much for me there”… let me tell you just how wrong you are. Just on my first day there, I was able to nab myself this amazing Art the Clown tee that I wanted to put on right then and there. Hell, there were several entire vendor stations dedicated solely to horror, selling fan-made signs, figurines and prop weapons, such as the angel blade from “Supernatural”. Arguably my favorite thing that I left the weekend with though was something Anthony bought me; this fantabulous looking Harley Quinn poster that I just could not put down. There was also a gorgeous Sailor Moon wand that’ll be waiting for me for another day. In short, if it’s something nerdy, it’s there for you when you go.

Meeting Your Heroes

Anthony: However, my personal favorite moment of the entire weekend has to go to meeting my all-time favorite writer Scott Snyder. I’ve been reading his comics for so long, in particular his jaw dropping Batman runs he’s done. There’s so many to choose from, such as “Batman: Death in the Family”, “Dark Knights Metal”, and his newest of “Absolute Batman”. He truly never misses. He has so many brilliant stories, whether its Batman or “Wytches”. I can’t recommend enough that you take the pleasure in checking out his work. It was truly an honor to meet him and have him sign my comic book!

Edalyn: The wracking nerves, the stuttering, and the beads of sweat are all worth it to meet some of your favorite people in the industry. For me, that was meeting Stephanie Phillips. For those who may not know who she is, she’s the current writer on “Daredevil” but has quickly made a name for herself over the last almost decade. I’ve only recently become a fan over the last few months and already, I highly recommend her work. Her most recent stuff also includes “Planet She-Hulk”, “Harley Quinn” and “All New Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider” the last of which I had the honor of getting her signature on. If superheroes aren’t your thing, then check out her other efforts such as “Grim”, Rick & Morty: Crisis on C-137″ and “A Man Among Ye”!

Final Thoughts

Anthony: This was genuinely one of the greatest times I’ve had in my life and can highly recommend going to a con if you haven’t before. Getting to talk to and meet so many passionate people is always a pleasure for me. Easily a 20/10 experience!

Edalyn: For a comic-con experience, let alone a first one, going to MC3 was absolutely memorable. Knowing that you’re in a space of like-minded people that’re easy to talk to and nerd out with is something that’s indescribable. From the cosplayers to the artists that create the things we love, there’s no one space better than a convention and MC3 stands out as one of the best.
