Nerd Initiative Celebrates Black History Month: Our Top 5 Superheroes!

Published:

Happy Black History Month! In February, every year, we celebrate African-American history. At Nerd Initiative, we celebrate and honor African Americans and the contributions that they have made in the world. This year is the 100th year of Black History Month. We are in the nerd space, so that means honoring the top five superheroes.

5. Black Lightning

Jefferson Pearce is a DC Comics character who has fought crime by himself and also alongside the Justice League. He was a teacher by day, but at night, he was fighting crime with his unique abilities. Black Lightning is one of those interesting characters who wanted better for his fellow adults, but he also cared about the kids. His powers include creating and controlling lightning, being a skilled fighter, and dealing with electromagnetic fields. In live action, he was portrayed by Cress Williams, and the show ran from October 2019 to May 2021.

4. Luke Cage

Luke “Lucas” Cage is a Marvel Comics character that was created by Archie Goodwin, and art by John Romita Sr. Luke comes from a tough background, being incarcerated, but also being a science experiment, which led to him acquiring these meta-human abilities. Luke at one point even served as the mayor of NYC! He eventually became friends with Iron Fist, and just like Black Lightning, he started to fight crime. In live action, he was portrayed by Mike Colter, and the television series Luke Cage ran from September 2016 to June 2018. You can watch the show on Disney +.

3. John Stewart

John Stewart is a DC Comics character who Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams created. John became a part of the Green Lantern Corps because of a really bad accident with Hal Jordan. Hal essentially wanted John to become a Green Lantern. Many people became Green Lanterns, but John was unique due to his military background. John’s personality makes him a really good Green Lantern, and most of the time, he heads up the many missions he has. In live-action, John Stewart will be portrayed by Aaron Pierre in the HBO Max Series “Lanterns” later on this year.

2. Storm

One of the most popular X-Men characters, Ororo Monroe, has the power to control the weather. Storm also happens to be married to another Marvel character, Black Panther. I believe that Storm and Black Panther are the cutest and most realistic couple that I have seen in Marvel history. She was raised in Harlem and has a skill in pickpocketing. Due to this, she ran into Professor X, who convinced her to become a part of the X-Men team. Storm has been portrayed by many actresses, but most notably Halle Berry, who denied on Jimmy Fallon that she is not in Avengers Doomsday (Or will we find out that she was lying? We will see in December 2026).

1. Black Panther

When it comes to a very popular Black superhero in history, Black Panther is the one. T’Challa is born to royalty, from his father, T’Challa Sr., and Queen Ramonda. T’Challa is not only skilled in martial arts, but he is also the most reputable when it comes to fighting crime and protecting the borders of Wakanda. T’Challa is very passionate about being true to himself, but also willing to collaborate with other superheroes, like the Avengers. In live-action, he was portrayed by Chadwick Boseman (may he rest in peace), and you can watch the Black Panther film that came out in February 2018. As well as Wakanda Forever, which came out in November 2022.
