The Story

Where we last left off in Unbreakable X-Men #2, Shuvahrak burned down Haven House and all its glory right before the X-Men’s eyes. Even with that devastating blow, the X-Men never called it quits. The Outliers made a vow that they planned to never break, and Gambit always fights for his family.

Now, in Unbreakable X-Men #3, the battle continues! According to Jitter, Shuvahrak was on her miserable way to Atlantis, so the team knew exactly where their next destination was. Upon arriving at Atlantis, the team gets a not-so-kind greeting from Namor. Namor is determined to make the X-Men leave by any means necessary. However, the X-Men have no plans of leaving, so this may be a battle to the death.

Combining the greatest parts of the characters, their bravery, their determination, their pure love they have for each other, we see an absolutely perfect ending to the Unbreakable X-Men miniseries.

The Writing

There aren’t many comics that genuinely made me tear up, but goodness, that’s what Gail Simone accomplished. There’s such a huge amount of heart in the pages of Unbreakable X-Men #3, making it the perfect ending to a phenomenal miniseries.

With Gambit going through the unimaginable life of a man who’s lost his true love, his arc was a beautiful love letter to Rogue. The Outliers prove time and time again the meaning of family, and this is no exception. The team as a whole is the perfect example of “family is chosen, not given”. All of this together, Gail Simone was somehow able to fit all of this into the pages of Unbreakable X-Men #3 while having a spotless balance throughout the story.

The Art

With so many incredibly talented artists involved with the comic, it’s a given at how marvelous the artwork would be. Mario Santoro, Luciano Vecchio, R.B. Silva, and Davide Tinto all lend their talents to Unbreakable X-Men #3, and it shows on every page. With so many tonal changes in the story, the artists were able to perfectly illustrate the changes and make each page even better than the last. From the fiery scenes of the burning of Haven House to the underwater battle at Atlantis, there’s not one scene change that pales in comparison to the others.

Espen Grundetjern handles the colors of the comic and does so expertly. Creating a perfect contrast of muted colors with vibrancy, Grundetjern is able to make the focal points nearly pop off the page. Alongside Grundetjern and the artists is Clayton Cowles, who handles the lettering of the comic. Cowles always delivers in quality, and that proves true in Unbreakable X-Men #3. There’s so much emotion in the story, and different emotions with the dynamics between the characters, and Cowles can perfectly portray that through the dialogue. Together, the creative team knocked it out of the park.

Final Thoughts

Unbreakable X-Men #3 really has it all! Emotion, passion, action, love, X-Men working side by side for the greater good. It’s high energy throughout the comic, which will keep your eyes locked into the comic until the very last page. This NEEDS to be on everyone’s pull list.

Overall Grade – 10/10
