The Story
Spider-Man proves time and time again what an adaptable hero he is, and that could not be more true in the Age of Revelation. When the X-Virus spreads and has an awful impact on the mutants and humans of the Marvel Universe, Peter must go through the motions like everyone else. Except his is a different case altogether.
Peter’s cells have always been radioactive, so the virus has a tougher time attacking his DNA. It takes longer for the virus to set in, which means he has time to figure out how to hold it off. Currently, every few weeks, he takes a blast of radiation to keep the virus at bay, but Peter can only take this treatment for so long until it kills him. Peter knows it’s killing him, and so does his girlfriend, Cecilia Reyes.
Although Peter is putting his body through so much torment to avoid the full effects of the virus, he’s still the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man that’s a hero to all. He still has a job to do in this new era of the world, and he doesn’t plan on giving up being Spider-Man anytime soon.
Joe Kelly, the writer of Radioactive Spider-Man #1, writes Spider-Man into the Age of Revelation with a story wild enough to fit into the event, but still has the classic Spider-Man vibe to it.
The Art
New York City in the dystopian world of Revelation is a terrifying place filled with villains but still have that NYC charm. Along with the wild-looking mutants of the world, Spider-Man has a new look of his own. Kev Walker brings a Spider-Man that looks intriguing and surprising, perfectly fitting into this thrilling event.
Alongside Walker, Chris Sotomayor, the colorist of Radioactive Spider-Man #1, brings the art to a whole new level with his talents. Radioactive Spider-Man #1 is filled with vibrant colors that contrast the darkness of the comic. Together, Walker and Sotomayor make the panels practically pop off the pages.
Joe Caramagna delivers high quality with his work on the lettering, which isn’t a surprise at all given how he always delivers. Caramagna ensures that the comic has a perfect flow in the dialogue, keeping you on your toes while you read every word.
Overall Grade – 9/10
Joe Kelly put in the work for Spider-Man in the Age of Revelation event, and knocked it out of the park. With an event so big and so exciting as X-Men: Age of Revelation, it was great seeing Spider-Man have his spot in the event, and it being done so well by the creative team.
