The Story
Gail Simone has entered the new dystopian world of X-Men: Age of Revelation and she did it with an explosion of emotions. A few months ago, Gail made a social media post saying she just wrote a line for Gambit that’s the hardest thing she’s ever had him say, and I have to think that it’s in this comic.
If not, I’ll need to seek therapy for what it actually is. In Unbreakable X-Men #1, we see Gambit in ways we’ve never seen him before. Broken, defeated, a ghost of himself. Surrounded by people he loves, people who care, and he doesn’t see them. If you thought the Age of Revelation was hard hitting, then you haven’t read Unbreakable X-Men #1 yet.
At the Haven House, there’s an ominous feeling surrounded the remaining heroes, but that ominous feeling goes out the window when a surprising character reappears with a warning that sends a shiver up Gambit’s spine. Something has awakened Shuvahrak, and she’s angry. With so much loss and tragedy, Remy Lebeau has nothing left to lose and is willing to risk it all, in what he hopes is one final time.
What I love so much about this comic is, while there’s so much devastation and loss throughout, you can truly see the love the characters have for one another. Rogue’s love for her teammates shines so brightly, and you can practically hear the warmth in her voice when she mentions them. Gambit, who is going through something unimaginable, speaks from his heart and lets his emotions do the talking. I think this goes back to the writer, Gail Simone, and shows just how ingrained she is in the hearts of the characters, with her passion spilling onto the page through their words.
The Art
Lucas Werneck came into the Age of Revelation swinging and didn’t miss once. With plenty of fantastic action scenes, incredible power sets on full display, and a team that puts their heart for all to see, Werneck broke my heart in the best possible way. I felt every emotion the characters portrayed and then some. The emotions their faces conveyed were so obvious, they jumped off the page. Along with Werneck is Clayton Cowles who handled the lettering of the comic, and did so with precision and expertise. Cowles brought so much depth to each word uttered by the characters, it would be impossible not to feel what they were feeling. Together, Werneck and Cowles created something heartbreakingly beautiful and brought Gail Simone’s harrowing story to life.
Overall Grade – 10/10
If there’s any part of the X-Men: Age of Revelation event to read to get you hooked into the event, it’s Unbreakable X-Men #1. The passion, the emotions, the heartbreakingly beautiful story, all amazingly done by Gail Simone and the creative team.
