Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I’m going to be reviewing the FIRST issue of the new Amazing Spider-Man series, Torn!

This series isn’t taking place in the present time we know it in the comics. It is however set in the past, and specifically when Peter Parker was a student at Empire State University! So just what is going to happne? Let’s jump into it!

The Amazing Spider-Man: Torn #1 by J Michael Straczynski (Writer), Pere Perez (Artist), Guru-eFX (Color Artist) & VC’s Joe Caramanga (Letterer) is a very compelling start to what should be a fantastic story.

The Story

Straczynski pens an incredibly compelling story right out the gate for the first issue. We see a Spider-Man that’s great at doing his job, but isn’t doing so well at balancing that with his Peter Parker side of things. It’s a familiar feeling for long time readers, and is sure to delight all.

I really liked how different this felt from what you might read any given week from a Spider-Man comic. Plus it has a bit of a throw back feel to things that’s a breath of fresh air. There isn’t the over arching, world ending, threat that you might be used to from issue to issue.

The main source of focus in the issue is a little bit mystical and has a bit of history behind it. I won’t spoil it, because it’s a fantastic story and it’s a story tailor made for the Halloween season. It’s a really intriguing story that is phenomenal from start to finish.

The Artwork

Pere Perez & Guru-eFX do a spectacular job with the artwork in this issue. Let’s be honest, there’s A LOT of Spider-Man comics out there these days. So it would be understandable if this one got lost in the shuffle, but it doesn’t. Part of what helps it not get lost in that shuffle is how different the artwork is in this issue compared to other ones.

FINAL POINT: It’s a really compelling story and artwork that stands out from the rest of the pack that really make this a can’t miss issue. If you’re not a huge Spider-Man fan but you’re looking for a new story, this just might be the series for you.

Overall Grade: 8.0/10
