In this first issue of Ultimate Hawkeye #1, I was surprised that Clint Barton was not Hawkeye. I had to remember there are many “Hawkeyes” throughout comics, including Kate Bishop. This story follows Charli Ramsey, who is on a mission to defeat Ulysses Klaue.
Klaue is trying to infiltrate the AirSpace Security System. Of course, Hawkeye is following him, and uses his arrows to defeat him. Hawkeye realizes that there is more for him to do, past beating Ulysses.
As far as the story goes, this is a perfect setup for Charli to explore more of the AirSpace system. Hawkeye’s goal is not only to defeat villains, but also use critical thinking skills to save the day. There is one point where he goes undercover at a party, just to get some further information of what Klaue intended to do. It definitely gives me detective vibes, similar to how they do things over at DC Comics.
In terms of the art, it is that classic ‘Marvel’ look. The art gets me engaged with wanting to read the story. I like how they show major representation with Charli, because he is Native American. They included a feather that is a part of his suit, and it is really distinct. I also like that with the action within the panels, the art pops literally off the page.
I’m interested to see what Ultimate Hawkeye #2 has in store. I am hoping that Charli also has more background on where he comes from, and how he became Hawkeye. It seems to be hinting at a meeting between Charli and Clint Barton. If that happens, I want to know exactly what they would be talking about.
Overall Grade: 8/10
