Catch up with Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League #1 here!
This is a review by both Matt of the weekly pop-culture podcast Hops ‘Geek’ News and Megan of the weekly non-toxic Marvel podcast Vigilante Vibes!
The Story and Writing
Megan – Now that Cheetah and Cheshire have a plan, they must form a team before setting the new plan in motion. Robbing the Justice League’s Watchtower will be no easy feat. It’ll take a team made of professionals who are carefully picked. According to Cheshire, it’ll take a dozen A-listers just to keep the Justice League busy, but Cheetah has a different plan. Cheetah says there needs to be no more than six. Also, not one of them can be A-listers, as they tend to not play well on a team. So, the search is on for a tech genius, someone with muscle, and two others that’ll give them an extra edge.
Greg Rucka does a fantastic job at building up a plan that we’re all craving to see play out. There was an interesting Ocean’s Eleven vibe happening with Cheetah and Cheshire as they’re recruiting for their wild plan, and I loved every part of it. The teammates they’ve already picked have me very interested to see them play off each other. It also makes me excited to see who else will join their team.
What I really enjoyed about this second issue is that you can see just how close Cheshire and Cheetah really are, with Cheetah even having a nickname for Cheshire’s daughter. It’s not often you get to see this kind of intertwinement with villains, and Rucka wrote it perfectly.
Matt – This book is giving me Ocean’s 11 vibes all the way through, and I absolutely love a good heist story! Rucka is delivering a masterclass on team assembly and allowing for things to be shown through the art rather than outright exposition.
What I appreciate the most about this story is that we are seeing Cheetah in a vulnerable and different light. When normally seeing her, she is a ferocious warrior and never shown to have a humanistic side to her. Greg gives her a lot of depth, and I find myself feeling bad for her as she is fighting against a higher power forcing her to do his bidding. This second issue only deepens how much I am enjoying this story.
The Art
Megan – Nicola Scott, Annette Kwok, and Troy Peteri have once again knocked it out of the park in Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League #2. The artists were able to adapt a different tone in the settings for the different characters who appeared in the story. It gave them their own time to shine. What I think Nicola Scott excels at is allowing the characters to wear their emotions on their sleeves. Scott is able to use their facial expressions to perfectly set the tone of the panel. Annette Kwok and Troy Peteri match the tones excellently with their work in colors and lettering, making it all come together very nicely.
Matt – The artwork is phenomenal in this issue, as there is a highly detailed and realistic side to the art, which in this issue tells more of the story in my eyes. We see these moments between characters, such as Cheshire’s daughter and Cheetah, in which their expressions deliver these deep emotions. The detailing and colors in the casino, as well for example, play into our senses as you can almost smell that musty and stale smoky smell a casino delivers. There is a lot being delivered detail wise in this run and the art team is nailing it.
Overall Grade – 9/10
Megan – 8.5/10. I’m very excited to see where Greg Rucka goes with this new team and to see the team get started on this wild heist!
Matt – 9.5/10. This issue has sold me completely on the run as a whole. If you love a good heist story, then this one is for you, as these characters bring out empathy and excitement, which is not something I would have ever thought from them. Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League may be full of fun and emotions, to which fans cannot sleep on any longer!
