The Story:
Matt – Dear Ryan North, who hurt you man? We left issue 1 thinking that perhaps Lex Luthor was not such a bad guy after all. He rescued a lost dog from the rain and danger right? WRONG!! Ryan immediately makes us forget all about that and instead hands us a pitchfork so we can hunt down Lex ourselves. We do get to see the inner workings of Lex’s mind and how he takes out his trauma on Krypto in cruel and demeaning ways. Not feeding Krypto and leaving him locked up really pulled at my heart every time Lex did it and furthered my hatred for this chump. However, I will say it did end on a happy note and Ryan did an excellent job in invoking a reaction from me as I read this issue.
Megan – As if I needed a reason to hate Lex Luther even more, Ryan North gave me all the reasons I needed. In Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #2, we see Lex as the new owner of Krypto, but I wouldn’t call him a proud owner. Lex thinks he is an expert at training a dog, but what he’s an expert at is abuse. Not allowing Krypto to eat if he acts out, hitting the dog, keeping him locked in crate, all of these things are not what an expert dog trainer would do. Poor Krypto has to deal with this, and Lex’s evil plan that involves murder. This story will have you so fully in your emotions, you’ll have to remind yourself that it’s just a story.
The Art:
Matt – Because reading the torture was not enough, Ian and Mike brought it to life in a very beautiful and yet haunting manner. The level of emotion that these two can give to Krypto enhanced what Ryan was doing with the story and brought even more emotion to the panels. The issue is darker and colored as such but, makes the epic fire in the final pages all the more satisfying and bright with the scene of Krypto running away.
Megan – Mike Norton and Ian Herring bring to life the sad and tragic story of Lex Luther showing what he thinks is an expert way of dog training. While the story brings out many emotions, the artists really brought a whole new beauty to the comic that gives the story a haunting feeling of despair.
Final Thoughts:
Matt – Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #2 is an emotionally draining and heart-wrenching issue that builds up the anger inside of you and then leaves you with an air of happiness in the end. Hats off to the team!
Megan – While the comic made me have a whole new level of hate for Lex Luther, I can’t deny how well it was written and how beautifully it was illustrated. The creative team deserves all their flowers because this was another banger of a comic.
Overall Grade: 10/10
