The Story:

Mark Waid was the perfect person to write this history. He delivers it in such a way that everything flows smoothly, and it does not get confusing or jumbled up. Having Barry Allen, who is retired, be our unofficial tour guide and my favorite hero makes this issue more fun. There were moments reading this that even I did not know some of the history. I feel as though this issue is going to help a lot of new and long time comic readers who feel as though they do not know where to start, find their footing.

Megan: I loved getting the history of the DC Universe from the eyes of Barry Allen, who’s one of my favorite characters. New History of the DC Universe was very informative and kept it easy to understand, especially for some, like me, who isn’t extremely knowledgeable in the history. I loved that the comic started all the way from The Source to the disastrous explosion of Krypton, giving so much history in between.

Mark Waid continues to deliver quality work and hits a home run with New History of DC Universe. I’ve always been a fan of Waid’s so I was very excited to check this comic out. He gives so much information, and I got to learn plenty from reading it.

The Art and Letters:

Right from the jump, as we look into Barry’s office space, there are easter eggs galore! The art team packs this opening page to the brim, which honestly left me staring for a while, trying to see everything I could find. The colors pop in this issue as we go through various eras and how some of our heroes got their start, such as the Lanterns. One thing that stood out to me was how much fun it seemed they were having when it came time to play with all of these different heroes and callbacks.

Megan: Todd Nauck and Jerry Ordway brought so much to New History of the DC Universe in terms of art. Each time jump was met with a beautiful new energy from the artists, and each had its own tone to its story. Joining Nauck and Ordway was Matt Herms and John Kalisz, who both handle the colors. Both Herms and Kalisz really elevated the stories with their work, making each page a work of art.

Final Thoughts:

This new historical account that we are getting is going to bring in a lot of fans and open doors to past lesser-known characters, and enrich their history. This is a great place for comic fans to dive headfirst into and a book anyone can read!

Megan: I think these comics are so important for new comic book fans, as it’s really an impossible task to start all the way in the beginning. New History of the DC Universe is perfect for a new DC Comics fan!
