ABSOLUTE FLASH #4: A Place to Call Home

Absolute Flash #4: Wally and Grodd have escaped the clutches of the government for the time being and are now searching for a place to lie low. Meanwhile, Wally’s dad in search of what happened to his son has discovered that Barry was up to more than he thought..

*SPOILERS AHOY*

The Story:

Jeff uses issue 4 as a moment for the audience to slow down and catch their breath after running at breakneck speed the first 3 issues. Wally meets a familiar face and how Jeff writes their introduction I really enjoyed as it is a new and fresh concept and idea. This issue left me curious about what Ralph is doing because my first thoughts is he is someone we already know and then Dr. Thawne being a scientist with the government. There are a lot of threads being laid down despite slowing things down and I am hooked.

The Art and Letters:

I want to start with the cover by Nick Robles because this screams out to my emo heart. This would be the sickest album cover for any of the various bands I love or maybe it is my Warped Tour hangover. Either way it depicts a lot with just showing Wally. Tom matches the elements of catching our breath with his lettering and this issue feels much at ease due to it.

A.L. and Chris take a break from the kinetic artwork and flashy colors to deliver a more soft-spoken pallet in this issue. They take us into the city and craft detailed scenery taking us on a bustling adventure as Wally is trying to find his place and hide out from those who are after him and Grodd. I noticed some more details of this issue with Grodd such as his almost grotesque head but, I am still in need of a plushy of him.

Final Thoughts:

Absolute Flash #4 allows us to catch our breath as we are not speedsters and sets the stage for character development and future plot points to pull from down the road.

Overall Grade: 9.5/10
