The Ultimates #13 – A New Approach

Published:

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the 13th issue of The Ultimates from Marvel Comics!

The Ultimates are still in preparation mode, getting ready for the return of The Maker. The Maker of course created this version of the Marvel Universe, and set it up in a way he wanted things to be. That was of course until Howard Stark locked him away. But The Maker is set to return, and soon! So just how are they going to deal with this? Let’s jump into it!

The Ultimates #13 by Deniz Camp (Writer), Juan Frigeri (Artist), Federico Blee (Color Artist), Travis Lanham (Letterer), Dike Ruan & Neeraj Menon (Cover Art) is a great issue that is going to set up incredibly for the next few issues.

The Story

Things are getting very interesting with what Deniz is setting up for the impending battle between our heroes & The Maker. The story in the issue isn’t necessarily action packed from cover to cover. But it is still an important one for the next few issues.

It’s going to be very interesting to see how this plays out leading up to and after the battle with The Maker. I understand why Tony & The Ultimates are doing what they’re doing, but I can’t help but feel like this is pandora’s box. For as many issues as it might help solve, it’s going to create just as many problems (if not more).

The story is great, and Deniz is truly on an incredible run with this series. Every issue feels important, and each issue is can’t miss material. Deniz truly deserves all the awards he can receive as it pertains to this series.

The Artwork

Federico Blee does an incredible job with the colors in this issue. I love the dark color tones that are primarily used, but they really stand out because there is still some bright shades in the panels. So there is still some hope despite how bleak things might seem. I also love the way that Travis presents the letter Tony is writing to his dad, it was a small touch with the way they designed it and it’s a great touch.

FINAL POINT: Deniz Camp & co. are truly on the run of a lifetime with this series. If you’ve been skipping out on this series for whatever reason, you truly are missing out on one of the best series Marvel has going right now. Camp’s story, along with the artwork from Juan & Blee blend together for a great issue that is about as can’t miss as it gets.

Overall Grade: 9.5/10
