Runaways #1- The Runaways Are Back Together

The Runaways are back together. Writer Rainbow Rowell, Artist Elena Casagrande, Colorist Dee Cunniffe, and Letterer Travis Lanham have made a beautiful first issue. 

We kickstart this issue with Dr. Doom and his assistant. Doom is about to send something off to the Prime Master, when 3 other Doombots show up. This then leads to fights breaking out everywhere with lots of Doombots. 

We then cut to Los Angeles, and more specifically to The Hostel. We see a Doombot coming out of the front door to a car parked in the garage. It is then discovered that Nico Minoru is sitting in the car. We then see flashbacks of what happened to the team 2 months before. 

The flashback shows a Grown-up Gert from the future kidnapping Chase, Karolina leaving to find her ex-fiance, Nico giving up her staff, and the entire team falling apart. We then see Nico and the rest of the team- Doombot, Victor, Molly, and Gert- having dinner. Victor and Doombot then get into a fight, which Molly breaks up. 

Elsewhere, Gert goes and takes her and Nico’s dinner up to Nico, where she is hitting the punching bag with a stick. The 2 of them are talking about how Nico should’ve given up the Staff Of One. 

The entire team then hears sounds from outside The Hostel, and they see multiple Doombots coming after their Doombot. We then proceed to see the team do everything they can to stop these Doombots. When it seems like they are out numbered, the final panel shows that Chase Stein from the future has returned. 

Final Grade: 10/10 

I loved the 2017 run of Runaways that Rainbow Rowell did, and this new run doesn’t skip or miss a beat at all. Fans of these characters will fall right back in love with the gang. This might be the best One World Under Doom spin-off that is out right now.
