In Red Hulk #4, Thunderbolt Ross was finally able to bring out his angrier half to help him, Deathlok, and Machine Man fight off the Doombots. After being isolated and drained of gamma radiation for so long, Ross finally gets to release the Red Hulk in Red Hulk #5, and it’s never felt so good. With so much anger and rage building and building, at last, he gets to let it all out, and these Doombots will feel the brunt of it.

Machine Man is watching the amazing spectacle put on by the Red Hulk from afar, with Deathlok at his side. Once Machine Man and Deathlok realize they have the world’s attention, they know it’s time to reach out to the US government. They reach out to the United States Air Force requesting immediate extraction, but are told they aren’t able to be engaged with in Latveria. The men have to get across the Latverian border if they want an extraction.

Machine Man, Deathlok, and Red Hud make it across the Latverian border to wait for their extraction from the US Air Force, but can it be that easy? Once the Air Force arrives, it becomes very clear from the lack of a salute from the colonel that this isn’t going to go the former prisoners want it to go.

The Writing

It seems like nothing can go right for Ross, Machine Man, and Deathlok after escaping Doom’s prison. Even with bringing the Red Hulk back and being able to get out of Latveria, now they find themselves at war with the US government. Benjamin Percy does a marvelous job at making you feel their frustration when taking another hit. When Ross realizes that the United States had bent their knee to Doctor Doom, the entire tone of the book changed, and it was handled perfectly by Percy.

I’m really curious to see where this goes. With the team now at war with the US Government while also on the run from Doom himself, I can only imagine how explosive the end fight will be.

The Art

The tone is set immediately by Geoff Shaw as he illustrates Red Hulk in the middle of his epic showdown of the great sea of Doombots, and it keeps that high voltage energy throughout the comic. Some of the best parts were seeing Red Hulk go to town after so much build up throughout the comic run, and the artists made sure to make it a big deal. Along with Shaw’s art, Bryan Valenza handles the colors, and makes each page even more exciting than the last. The juxtaposing colors of the bright red of Red Hulk and the bright green from the Doombots electricity made for some really stunning panels.

Overall Grade – 8.5/10
