Catch up with One World Under Doom #1 here!
“REVOLUTION… LIKE LIGHTNING! Doom took over the world. And Bucky Barnes helped him do it. To atone for his unwitting role in Doom’s triumph, Bucky assembles a team with one goal: burn it all down. But when Bucky’s saboteurs — including Black Widow, Songbird, USAgent, Sharon Carter and a few surprise wildcards — launch a no-holds-barred campaign to tear Doom’s Empire apart, Doom decides to prove that revolution ends in blood…” (Credit: Marvel)
The Story
Doom has taken over the world as the emperor, and says he has Bucky to thank for that. As a token of thanks, he invites Bucky to be his right hand man and run his secret police, the Fulgur Victoris. Doom wants Bucky to kill as he sees fit, especially to those that oppose Emperor Doom. After Doom tells all of this to him, it becomes clear that all of this was a set up by Bucky and Val, which isn’t something Doom takes lightly.
Bucky gets transported back to Thunderbolts Mountain. Doom appears immediately with only one warning. Bucky has one week to decide if he will bow to Emperor Doom, or he can watch everything he loves burn. Of course, Bucky has no plans to bow to Emperor Doom, so he comes up with a plan of sabotage. With help from Natasha and Songbird by his side, he hopes to hit Doom where it hurts. That place is in all of the nuclear warheads confiscated from Earth.
According to Doctor Doom, he is neither a fool nor a tyrant, and he plans to prove just that.
The Writing
When I heard that Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly would be the ones to write Thunderbolts: Doomstrike #1, I knew I was in for a wild ride, and I was right. The comic has everything you’d want, action, scheming, and high stakes. What I really loved about Thunderbolts: Doomstrike #1 is that it showed exactly how serious Doom is about keeping his power and his role of emperor.
He’s willing to spill any amount of blood to make his points very clear, and that’s exactly what he does here. Lanzing and Kelly keep you hooked into the story, and leave you wanting to read so much more, especially after ending with that wild cliffhanger.
The Art
Tommaso Bianchi does a fantastic job throughout the comics making you feel you’re right in the action alongside Songbird and Bucky. Bianchi nails the menacing tone Doom bleeds into every panel he’s in. What I appreciate the most was how well the facial expressions drawn. You could pick up the mood each character was putting out there so very easily with just one look.
Along with Bianchi’s art, you have Yen Nitro’s expert use of colors which makes each panel hit that much harder. With the fantastic art from Bianchi and Nitro, you also have Joe Sabino on letters, who made each sentence have such an impact on the story as a whole. All in all, the artists added a whole new depth to the already exciting storyline.
Overall Grade – 10/10
