Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I’m going to be reviewing the 4th issue of The High Republic Adventures: Echoes of Fear from George Mann & Dark Horse Comics!
Things are getting very interesting right now, with Reath Silas, Amadeo Azzazzo & Cohmac Vitus hot on the trail of the mystical Rod of Ages. It’s an ancient object associated with the Nameless, and legend has it that they can be controlled with the rod.
The Nameless are the creatures used by the Nihil that affect Force sensitive users ability to use the force. Is there anything to the legends? Let’s jump into it!
Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – Echoes of Fear issue #4 by George Mann (writer), Vincenzo Federici (Illustrations), Francesco Segala with Gloria Martinelli (Colors). Also Comicraft’s Tyler Smith & Jimmy Betancourt (Letters) & Eduardo Segala & Valentina Taddeo (Cover Art).
The issue is a decent one, but I was honestly expecting more from it by the end of it. Firstly, we’re reaching what feels like a climax of the story thus far.
Secondly, while I realize we’re only four issues in this feels like a fairly big issue for the story. Particularly since every issue up to this point has been building up the lore & history of the Rod of Ages. Additionally to this the object in question is tied into an integral creature that’s been heavily featured for the last few years.
While most of the issue is focused on the Jedi journeying on Varovia to find the Rod, there is a bit that is action packed. Without a doubt it’s the fight between the Jedi & the forces guarding the Rod of Ages that is the highlight.
FINAL POINT: The issue doesn’t feel like it’s the most important one so far. But it does try to convey that feeling from start to finish. Perhaps that feeling will come across once we know where the story goes from here. But for now, the issue is fine. It’s nothing to write home about, but it’s a fun read regardless.
Overall Grade: 8.0/10
