The Story:

Mark Waid is doing something I haven’t seen in a Batman and Robin story before which is building their relationship and their bond. We’ve seen them together in action but, Waid is showing Bruce learn to be the father figure to Dick. It’s a unique take and goes deeper than sidekick and hero but, to the relationship we’ve known them to have.

Another interesting piece to the story is showing how caught up in his mission Bruce is that he even disregards Alfred. The character dynamic in this run and in this issue in particular stands out head and shoulders above anything we’ve gotten in the past.

The Art and Letters:

Clayton kicks this issue off crafting the letters as if we are watching the opening credits to a film. Mostly we add the credits on a stand alone page however, this issue builds them into the scene.

Lopes and Samnee capture the Batman tone by giving us an overall darker tone to the panels. Batman is brooding in the dark at his computer and his mansion is dimly lit. But, when it comes to showing Grayson’s child-like spirit they don’t shy away from filling the pages with bright colors to contrast the brooding behavior.

Final Thoughts:

Batman and Robin Year One #3 is giving us a unique and special take on the relationship with Bruce and Dick. We’re getting a behind the scenes look into how they built the bond the duo have and it’s a very unique and special feeling. The issue ends on a cliffhanger putting the cherry on top of this cartoonesque vibe. This run is going far too under the radar check it out!
