This review was made possible by advance screeners of Cross. Cross premieres on Prime Video on November 14th.
Cross is a new television series, that is based on the James Patterson novel, of the same name. As the audience we follow Alex Cross (Aldis Hodge) who is a forensic psychologist and also a detective. Immediately, I was impressed by Alex’s charisma when he was talking to other people. Alex has a family, a wife Maria Cross (Chauntee Schuler Irving) and two children, Janelle Cross (Melody Hurd) and Damon Cross (Caleb Elijah). As well as living with them, their grandmother as they affectionately call “Nana Mama” Cross (Juanita Jennings). Alex’s world is quickly shifted by the end of the first of the first episode. Alex seems like a fully flushed character, he wants to do his job well, but also is protective of his family.
When Alex is at the job, we meet even more people who are important to his story. We meet his partner John Sampson (Isaiah Mustafa). As well as Chief Anderson (Jennifer Wigmore), Lt. Oracene Massey (Sharon Taylor), and also Shawna De Lackner (Stacie Greenwell). Alex is tasked to find the serial killer, who has been taking people and ultimately killing people. Like any other detective shows, there are clues that are throughout the series. I really like how detailed the show is, with capturing the attention of the audience, to figure out the killer.
I also like that Alex Cross is unpredictable. There are many times that he has quite the temper. I only realize towards the end, as to why he has those outbursts of anger. I really appreciate also the music that is played many times, in the background of the show. Many of the artists are “rap artists” but that goes alongside with Alex’s style. I also like that they used a very popular spot for where Alex meets with people. It’s Ben’s Chili Bowl, that he frequently eats at and knows a lot of the people who work there. I believe it is perfect, because the entire show is set in Washington D.C.
Overall this show is very interesting. Aldis Hodge really becomes Alex Cross. Aldis makes smart decisions on how to portray Alex. At the end of the day, Alex is just like a regular guy. I am not going to lie, there were a few pacing moments, that I noticed in certain episodes. Other than that, the show is a perfect depiction of the character that people love and adore. Alex is very smart, and uses his forensic psychology skills throughout the show. This show definitely is worth the watch, and I hope everyone enjoys the ride that the audience will go on.
I give this series a 8.5/10.
