Justice vs Madness in Conquest 2099

This issue kicks off with a knock down drag out battle between Silver Surfer and Dracula. It’s a really great moment of dialogue as we explore more of Dracula’s character and Silver Surfer gets philosophical, warning Dracula, “Past the threshold of justice lies madness.” The writing here is fantastic from Steve Orlando.

Then we get a look at the journey that Earth’s group of heroes are on as the seek out the Araneons. Again, the dialogue and character interactions shine. Orlando has a firm grasp on the machinations of these different personalities and weaves them together so wonderfully. I enjoy every bit of banter and piece of lore they drop in dialogue. No space goes wasted and the pace moves with purpose but gives you time to soak it all in.

Conquest 2099 Builds Worlds and Brings Them Together

Next up is a look into the Araneon strategy as Spidercide and The White Widow dive into Araneon politics and culture. This race of spider humanoids is so well fleshed out and runs deep. “The Spindles must turn” and “The empire is wheel” are just a couple of unique good phrases to explain so much about this race without having to go into heavy exposition.

Finally everything seems to be coming to a head as all of these forces begin to meet on the cosmic battlefield. The Araneons and Vampires wage war in space and the heroes of Earth arrive with help from the Red Hulk. Not to mention the attempt by Dracula to consume a sun provokes the arrival of Star-Lord. So many moving pieces are converging and it’s exciting.

The Perfect Art to Compliment the Perfect Conquest 2099

The artwork is phenomenal as always. Ibraim Roberson, Luis, and Junior really capture the epic battle between Dracula and Silver Surfer, which feeds into the huge space battle later on. There’s so many details and Big effects that don’t get lost in the fray. Unique designs for the Araneon capitol and their armada are so cool. Anytime the Darkhawk is on a page you can’t help but stare at it for a moment. There’s a spectacle aspect to everything while still giving off a “grind-house” type of vibe to everything.

The colors by Andrew Dalhouse are as good as ever. The Silver Surfer stands out so well amongst the dark horrors of this space. The coldness of the Araneons and the path of destruction they leave behind is so well executed. The highlight of Dalhouse’s work comes in the form of Red Hulk. He is such an intimidating looking figure on panel and his colors take that to another level. The color effects of his cosmic power and interstellar travel is beautiful.

Everything Points to 9/10

This book was a blast from beginning to end. So much is done in so little time without rushing. The story is a well oiled machine that’s a treat for the eyes as well. Huge action sequences are balanced by some moving and thoughtful dialogue. These characters all get a chance to show off their abilities and help build this fantastic world!
