As the Venom War persists, we’re seeing more and more moving parts in the background of it. In Venom War #3, we saw that the Venom War went far back as an ancient rivalry between Kang and Doctor Doom. Kang has taken control of Rascal, who’s host is Normie Osborn, while Doom has chosen Flexo. Neither symbiote has any control over their actions and are working purely by Kang and Doom’s orders.
This variant of Kang, He Who Schemes, brings in the Fantastic Four to fight his battle with Doom for him. He Who Schemes tells Marvel’s First Family that he is unable to attack Doom himself so he needs their help to put an end to Doom’s chronoscheme. In reality, Kang is imprisoning the Fantastic Four into a never ending time loop of five minute intervals.
The Writing
I have to say, this was a wild addition to the Venom War event, but wild in the best way possible. Who can ever get tired of more tension between Kang, Doom, and the Fantastic Four? Adam Warren did a great job making Venom War: Fantastic Four #1 a fun ride from the beginning to the end. It’s definitely a different vibe from the rest of the comics in the Venom War event, as it should be. It was great seeing how many moving parts there really is in the Venom War, especially with Kang and Doom.
The Art
The artists of Venom War: Fantastic Four #1 did a phenomenal blending the symbiotes in with the larger than life characters like Kang and Doom. Throughout the comic, it’s a plethora of gorgeous colors juxtaposed with the perfect amount of detail in each panel. My favorite part is how the artists depicted Johnny Storm with his powerset throughout the comic. It was perfectly used in each scene he’s in and becomes the perfect focal point of the page.
Final Thoughts
Venom War: Fantastic Four #1 was a nonstop thrill ride of excitement coming from the smartest characters in the Marvel Universe. It was a definitely very different for the Venom War, but I think it always somehow fit in perfectly. The comic does a great job showing just how huge the Venom War truly is.
