Green Lantern Dark #1:
The world’s heroes are all gone as they fell to the hands of Grundy and his undying group of bloody-thirsty monsters. There is a rumor of one hero left who goes from town to town, saving the citizens of Earth and fighting against the darkness. Rina Mori is the Green Lantern; for better or worse, she is Earth’s final beacon of light.
Creative Team:
Writer: Tate Brombal
Artist: Werther Dell’edera
Colors: Giovanni Niro:
Cover: Werther Dell’edera
The Artwork:
Werther brings over his ghastly artwork from Something is Killing the Children and pencils a hauntingly dark first issue in this series. The landscape is bleak and captures the tone of hope being lost and a world over run by monsters. Our Green Lantern sits in the shadows cloak overhead which reminds me of Aragorn and his big reveal.
Giovanni accentuates the bleak setting by the shading and dark colors. Yet, despite the darkness Giovanni colors in some very bright spots through the characters and especially the Lantern. The battle sequences and usage of green standout amazingly in this issue as well as the monsters as they are terrifying looking beings. The artwork overall captures the horror spirit it intended to capture.
The Writing:
Tate does a great job of capturing the child spirit of never losing hope or belief in their heroes even as our mainstay in this book is doom and gloom. The bravery displayed in this and the true spirit of a lantern shows Tate still holds the Corp and their background true to spirit and crafts both a tale of horror and hope.
Overall:
This was a fun first issue as it is perfect for DC’s dark they have been working on and for Halloween. The team bring Green Lantern Dark #1 to life in a ghastly and yet hopeful way showing that even in our darkest hour there are lanterns of hope!
