The new team
Now that Krakoa has fallen, the mutants have to reintegrate themselves into the human society. With the already existent tension growing between the mutants and the humans, someone has to keep the very fragile peace between the two. That’s where the Sentinels come in. Not the usual mutant-hunting robots, but a group of soldiers dripping in nanotech. They must keep the peace between the humans and the mutants, and in order for them to do that, they must go after some of the most diabolical mutants the world has seen.
In Sentinels #1, we get a pretty good look on the inside of how the new Sentinel team works. The team starts off with a lineup of Lockstep, Sawtooth, Shellback, and Voivod and their first mission is to track down and bring in Omega Red. Obviously, that’s no easy feat even with superpowered soldiers with nanotech. Omega Red gives them the fight of their life but ultimately, they were able to him to Graymalkin Prison, formerly Xavier’s School for gifted Youngsters. There, we see more about how the Sentinels work, like how they give them mood regulators for “their own protection”, or how they have an AI system that monitors their hormones at any given moment.
It’s pretty interesting how it all works and I have to say, I’m really intrigued by the comic so far. I found it to be really entertaining all the way through. It’s certainly a much darker vibe than most of the stuff that’s come out of From the Ashes, so it was a breath of fresh air.
The artwork in Sentinels #1 fit the tone very well with its dark and grittiness. Justin Mason, Federico Blee, and Travis Lanham did a phenomenal job keeping you hooked to every page. Another thing they did really well was the looks of the Sentinels suits. Each one was very different from the other, but they still all correlated very nicely.
All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by Sentinels #1. It was compelling, it was exciting, and the characters give the story so much to work with. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next for our new team of peace-keepers.
