Redcoat #6:

It’s the final countdown! For Simon Pure, that is after Benedict Arnold double-crossed him, and now he finds himself tied down on a boat as he is set to bring about the fall of America at sunrise. His only hope may be found within himself and a young German genius.

Let’s Kick Things Off With the Art:

The artwork matches the tone of what feels like a story’s grand finale. The Grand Architect is shrouded in a colorful rendition of the American flag. There is an array of characters drawn about on the ship where unbeknownst to them the end of America is taking place. The way the explosions coming from Simon are drawn fill the page with blues and particularly the aging of Simon in his most desperate moments showed off immense artistic talent. As they aged him up with each panel the shadows and wrinkles across his face became apparrant and his hair turned bright white. For me that was the standout of this issue.

Rob letters a flawless issue as the exasperation is met with our characters tones and the excitement matches as the events unfold.

Now For the Story:

This particular arc wraps up in heart-pounding fashion as Johns had us going for a moment, believing this could genuinely be the end of our cowardly hero. Yet, we see the true heroism that is buried deep inside of Simon that is brought to the surface. I found Simon’s slow shift to be a lot of fun as he shows deep down that he genuinely cares. He cares for Einstein and America, and despite facing danger and imminent death, he saves Einstein. To me, a hero is built with flaws, and Johns, and the team has created a compelling character with Simon Pure. If it weren’t for the cliff hanger in the final scenes I would have truly thought this was the end of our story as it wraps up things perfectly while also leaving breadcrumbs for what is to come.

Overall:

Redcoat #6 wraps this tumultuous arc by showing that there is more than meets the eye with Simon, and unlikely allies and courage can be found in even the most unexpected places. This may have been my favorite issue of the series so far, as it delivers emotion and action. The cliffhanger in particular has me on edge, and I can’t wait to see where it leads next!
