Catch up with Spider-Society #1!
After an explosive first issue of Spider-Society, the remaining Spider-heroes try to come up with a plan to take down the Sinister Squadron. In Spider-Society #1, it was revealed that Hunter-Spider was a traitor to the Spider-Society and was working with the Sinister Squadron. It was also found out that Miguel was used as bait to capture the members of the Spider-Society.
It seems that the Sinister Squadron is always one step ahead of the Spider-people and that really puts a damper on the heroes efforts in stopping them. After half of the Spider-Society was taken, the remaining team of Araña, Weapon VIII, Spider-Woman, Spider-Punk, Web-Weaver, Miguel, and Spider-Cat have to come up with some kind of plan to stop the Sinister Squadron from eliminating all of the Spider-people.
With Araña in charge, she comes up with a plan to send Web-Weaver and Weapon VIII to attack the Sinister Squadron hard and abruptly. But that plan fails as Weapon VIII is put under a hallucination that leaves him writhing in pain. As Spider-Woman says, they were sent to the slaughter. Miguel, working behind the scenes to try to get into the Sinister Squadron’s comm channels, uses Spider-Cat’s screech to put the villains in a shocking hault, allowing the remaining Spider-Society to flee to safety.
While this is happening, it’s revealed who the big bad is of the Sinister Squadron and what they’re willing to do to eliminate all Spider-people. Ghost-Spider and Miles are threatened using their families as the target, which doesn’t stop at just them. The Sinister Squadron has their eyes on all family and friends of the Spider-Society and plan on playing that card.
The Art
The artwork perfectly captures what you’d hope for in a comic about the Spider-Society! It brings the vibrant energy of a Spider-Man comic to life with its vivid colors and meticulous attention to detail. I particularly appreciated how each spider-person of the remaining Spider-Society got their moment to stand out. None of them felt diluted or overshadowed. Each character was illustrated and colored with striking beauty and just the right touch of drama.
The cover art is another thing I really loved about Spider-Society #2. Pete Woods did a beautiful job at showing just how brutal this run with his hard-hitting cover with Miguel’s bright contrasting colors and the Spider-Society looking lifeless in the background.
The Writing
There’s a lot going on in Spider-Society #2 as it’s constant action throughout the comic. It is hard to watch your favorite Spider-heroes get beating down time after time, but it certainly adds tension to the already exciting run. The reveal of who the big bad is was something I didn’t see coming, and was a really creative idea in my opinion. I’m excited to see where this run goes as so much has already happened in the first two installments.
