Aliens VS. Avengers #1:

Writer: Jonathan Hickman

Artist: Esad Ribic

Colorist: Ive Svorcina

Letters: VC’s Cory Petit

PUBLISHER: MARVEL COMICS

The Avengers have faced many mighty great threats to Earth however, they have never faced the Xenomorphs! Earth’s mightiest heroes must team up to save the planet once more in this four-issue story from Marvel Entertainment.

Let’s Talk About the Art and Letters:

Matt: When I first heard this story, I was instantly hooked. I could not wait to get my hands on it and crack open the pages. This is a grim tale, and Esad, along with Ive, work harmoniously to bring about a clash of beauty and grit. The Xenomorphs are flawlessly crafted down to their snake-like movements and slimy black skin dripping with acid.

However, what really took me in was how this is a tale featuring an older crowd of Avengers. Bruce is a man on the verge of blindness and death, Captain Marvel, Miles, T’Challa, and Valeria are all old and past their prime and the detail down to the last eye wrinkle is crafted meticulously. The montage of our Earth falling brought about various panels of death and despair that we could not help but watch despite the urge of wanting to fight this battle ourselves. Cory worked well hammering home the despair and age of our heroes in their voices as those left alive fight to save what is left. It’s a beautiful issue that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Megan: When reading Aliens Vs. Avengers #1, the only word that played through my head was “hope”. While it shows differently in every character, it felt like a constant theme. Bruce’s hope was flailing as the last human city on Earth was on the brink of falling. Valeria has hope that she can end this invasion once and for all. Carol has hope in Valeria. Throughout the comic, the artwork perfectly portrays the feelings of desperation and hope. The amount of detail in every panel is so immaculate, you truly find yourself lost in the emotions playing off of the characters. The muted colors adds even more of an impact to this powerful story. This comic was expertly created by the artists who truly showed their talents throughout the book.

How About the Story:

Matt: Jonathan Hickman is having a month between this and Wolverine Revenge. Immediately, he sets the tone on the opening pages with Black Panther and his team coming upon the Xenomorphs and robots. In Fillms, we have only seen the Aliens spawn and grow in short periods, but Hickman builds upon this lore expertly and showcases how fast they grow and spread, much like a disease. They are ferocious and quickly take over Earth in a primal way. He has some surprises up his sleeves as there are surprise characters such as Apocalypse making a final stand when all other mutants have abandoned Earth.

Megan: Aliens Vs. Avengers #1 was hard-hitting throughout the entire read, keeping you on the edge of your seat. From the very first page, you’re hooked in with no turning back. The story is compelling with quite a few twists and turns, even a few unexpected characters showing how hard the invasion has hit every part of Earth. Admittedly, I’ve never been too big into the Alien franchise, but this has me wanting to dive into it head first.

Final Thoughts:

Matt: Aliens VS. Avengers #1 is full of surprises and heroes preparing to make their last stand. Hickman and his team have shown right away that they understand the alien lore and appreciate the material they are trusted with. Four issues may not satisfy how amazing this run is about to be.
