The New X-Men

Continuing the return of the X-Men after the Krakoan Era with X-Men #2. In X-Men #1, we were introduced to the new team of X-Men, and got a great look at the different dynamics within the team. The new X-Men team being Cyclops, Juggernaut, Kid Omega, Beast, Psylocke, Temper, Magik, and Magneto is bound to create some great moments.

So far, I’m really enjoying the line up and the banter between the members. Kid Omega is an arrogant little thing but it’s all in good fun. Admittedly, I was somewhat concerned about how Juggernaut would fit into the X-Men, but so far it’s been excellent. Psylocke, Majik, and Cyclops battling an alien invasion together was something I didn’t have in my bingo card, but boy am I glad it happened. So far, the team has great chemistry together and I look forward to seeing more.

Aliens, Mutants, Spaceships, Oh My!

The X-Men were investigating the activation of a new mutant’s X-Gene, which happens to be an adult rather than a child which is usually the case. Understandably, they’re all confused why it happened, but the mission is at hand and that’s to get the new mutant safe and stabilized.

This proves more complicated than it sounds as it just so happens that an alien invasion is taking place where the new mutant is located. The new mutant, who’s name is Ben, is all kinds of upset. He says he was taken into a spaceship and he refuses to go back. Ben refuses to believe he’s a mutant, as he’s an adult and he would’ve known prior to this. So, this begs the question, why are these X-Genes being activated in adulthood?

Somethin else to look forward to in X-Men #2 is the conclusion to the Deadpool and Wolverine: Weapon X-Traction. No spoilers from me, but I loved it!

The Art

Something I think that’s worth mentioning is that the art feels very “X-Men” to me. It feels like we’re back to the basics of the X-Men comics and I love that. X-Men #2 was illustrated with X-Men fans in mind and it shows beautifully. You have the dramatic panels during the fight scenes that really showcase the character’s powers in brilliant detail and color. Given the classic X-Men vibe of the comic, you also get some great closeups of the characters as well as full scene views making the battles feel larger than life.

The Writing

As I said, the dynamic written between the characters is top notch. I really like how the characters are written to work with each other. The chemistry shows loudly, which really showcases Jed MacKay’s talent as a writer. There’s some humorous banter between the characters, which felt really casual and done with ease. The X-Men played off each other so well, that it really felt like they’ve been a team longer than two issues. There’s a lot to work with here and I can’t wait to see what’s next for the X-Men.

I give this a 9 out of 10.
