One heck of a first day of school

NYX #1 is here and it’s already started off with a bang! Told from the perspective of Kamala Khan, AKA Ms. Marvel, we get a look at the world of mutants after the end of Krakoa(which you can read about HERE). Kamala enrolled back at her high school, which is more inclusive to mutants now more than ever. She meets a new friend named Sophie Cuckoo, who’s also a mutant.

Mutant inclusion indeed

To further prove the point that the school is inclusive to mutants, they have a new class called Examinations of Post-Krakoan Dispora taught by the mutant Prodigy. Despite the attempt of inclusion, there’s still anger towards the mutants brought by the group the Truthseekers. Kamala and Sophie come to blows with them after a Truthseeker attacks a fellow mutant who’s bartending named Anole. It’s clear that post-Krokoa life will be a struggle for our favorite mutants. But of course, the mutants won’t stand for the hatred. Kamala is trying to make the streets safe for the mutants but she isn’t the only one. Wolverine is out there fighting the good fight as well.

With the villains setting out to create chaos for the heroes and the humans, it’s clear this run is going to be a wild ride.

The Art

The artists of NYX #1 perfectly captured the essence of the New York City in their panels. With the use of bright colors juxtaposed with the darker colors, it has the vibe of the NYC night life. The characters were drawn beautifully with excellent detail. My personal favorite look was Wolverine, who was illustrated in such a bold and gorgeous way.

The Writing

I really enjoyed the first installment of NYX and can’t wait to see what comes next. The storyline was a lot of fun with Kamala meeting other mutants that are living without a secret identity. Kamala is one of the most loved comic characters and I think she was handled perfectly in NYX #1. The dialogue was very modern and felt authentic to her character. The comic was an exciting ride that had a few twists and turns that kept the excitement flowing throughout NYX #1.

I give this a 8 out of 10.
