Zatanna finds herself out of her element of bunnies in hats as she faces a demon bent on destroying more than her place of employment. The chaos doesn’t seem to end as she finds herself with a magical group of magic wielding beings named the Casters who insist she carries the ability to wield terrible and mighty abilities.
The Art:
Javier continues to dive into his bag of tricks as the art style bends between old-fashioned colorful newspaper art and simplistic and yet detailed chaos. Javier’s imagination is running wild as the demon drawn in this issue sports many colorful and scary characteristics, leaving us to marvel in the face of danger.

The use of shadows hiding character faces works well to tell this ever-evolving mystery, leaving the audience’s imagination to carry themselves forward. The minute details, such as Zatanna’s torn leggings and the morphing costume of our angry, mysterious, magical heroine, wrap the details up nicely as this run continues to exceed expectations.
The Writing:
Mariko continues to weave a compelling tale of mystery and intrigue. This issue gives us a few more breadcrumbs as we find out Zatanna is holding the key to a mysterious power, yet she does not remember anything besides her father disappearing. It’s a sort of origin tale that I connect with as it is a unique spin on her powers and upbringing.
We are introduced to interesting antagonists, the Casters, who have been hiding in the shadows her entire life, which leaves us with more questions as the action subsides. Hassan continues their stellar run, crafting unique ways to wrap the lettering around the action and evoke emotions within us and the characters.
Overall:
Zatanna Bring Down the House #2 launches us further into the dark and mysterious depths of magic and introduces concepts that suck the reader in immediately. It is quickly climbing the must-read pile for myself, and I would recommend new readers and old alike to dive into this!
