The Last Mermaid is an Amazing Story

I’ve already said so many things about issues 1 and 2 and given so many reasons as to why I love this story. Just when I thought I couldn’t love it any more, issue 3 just cranks it up to 11. The Mermaid as a character continues to surprise us and show us all of these amazing survival traits she has. She’s tough, smart, and caring, and she’s hasn’t said but a few words thus far. That’s an amazing feat by creator Derek Kirk Kim. To convey so much story telling and character depth without an abundance of prose and dialogue.

In issue 3 we are in the middle of the action as a huge monster had risen from the floor of the underwater cavern that The Mermaid and Lottie were considering for their new home. With Lottie is danger The Mermaid instantly goes on the offensive, and saves Lottie from being a snack. Kim uses every panel to convey rising action and heighten the suspense, through body language, and a superb use of colors.

Derek Kirk Kims designs are out of this world. The underwater creature attacking The Mermaid and Lottie is so imaginative. It looks beautiful and terrifying all in the same ways. Every time you think that the creature has reached its limits, it surprises us with another feature or adaptation. It truly seems like an unstoppable force and adds high stakes to The Mermaids attempted escape. Not even her H.A.V.C. is enough to overpower the creature.

During The Mermaid and Lotties attempt to flee the monster, an introduction of a dark figure provides assistance in a dire moment. We’ve seen only a brief glimpse of this figure before, following The Mermaid through the desert wasteland. An awesome cyberpunk style design that creates a mysterious and dangerous air to this new character. Now, it aids them and looks quite formidable until they become trapped in the jowls of the monster and The Mermaid has to make a decision: Help this mysterious person? Or use this as a chance to escape?

Everything Points to 10/10

Look, I’m not out here throwing out 10’s just because I like it or because I may be obsessed with this series. The Last Mermaid is riveting, beautiful storytelling. Derek Kirk Kim has pulled inspiration from so many different mediums (Comic-books, anime, manga, animation) and created his own amazing piece of art that feels so new and yet familiar. I am on the edge of my seat while reading, while also being in awe of the imagery of each panel. It feels so cinematic. I wish it would run for a hundred issues, but I know this best stories have an end. I can’t wait to read issue 4 and you should hop on it while you still can!
