A senile character, Bruce Wayne, is long past his prime and living in a nursing home where his memory has faded. Bruce is instructed to write down his memories in a journal to keep his mind sharp and some memories about him.
In this alternate world Bruce recounts his time as a child when he lost his parents and how he ended up in Black Gate as a secret society was out to get him and the company his father fought so hard to protect. Let’s travel back in time for Batman Dark Ages.
The Art:
The Allreds do a great job from page one, creating a lot of intricate detail within their pages. The opening scene of Tomorrow World has a futuristic feeling as it was intended to, and the amount of line work is very tedious yet immaculate.
Most importantly, they made us feel as though we, the reader, were transported back in time reading comics in a newspaper with their retro vibe. The art team also managed to make Gotham feel like a hopeful and menacing place, as though it had its own heartbeat, which can sometimes be a tough task to do.
The Writing:
Mark matches the retro feeling with the way he writes. Painting young Bruce as this spoiled brat who thought he could get away with anything was an interesting take.
Overall, changing up Batman’s origin story just slightly seems to work well, as it provides a refreshing rehash of something we have seen before. IT will be interesting to see the character growth we will be given within this tale, and it’s something I am looking forward to.
Overall:
I enjoyed this blast from the past take on Batman. The team was able to give us an intriguing take on the Caped Crusader that feels different and new. This is a comic worth picking up monthly and following along.
9/10 Cigars.
