The Writing:
Marty:
Daniel Warren Johnson’s dual role as both writer and artist proves to be a winning combination in Transformers #4, seamlessly picking up the narrative from the intense cliffhanger in the previous issue. The pacing of the story is relentless, immersing readers in the heat of battle right after Spike takes a critical hit.
Johnson’s writing skillfully navigates the complexities of the war between Autobots and Decepticons, making the latter increasingly detestable for their ruthless tactics. The emotional investment of readers deepens as the story unfolds, showcasing Johnson’s ability to swiftly drive the narrative during action sequences while also taking poignant moments to tug at the heartstrings. This issue lays the groundwork for significant developments, promising a compelling future for long-time Transformers fans.
Ken:
Johnson creates a sense of desperation as things look their most grim. The sense of nobility in Optimus Prime shines as he frantically attempts to get Spike to safety. Johnson drives that point home with every action Prime takes. This shines through when the humans need help and Prime makes a difficult choice. Even through the high-octane action, the emotional pull is the one that makes this chapter go.
The pacing is at high speed with the rising action. This is all based of StarScream, who never loses his manic behavior. With a sadistic smile, the death and destruction rises with every panel he’s involved with. If readers questioned how unhinged he has become, just wait until they see the final moments with him and the “loyal” Decepticons.
Speaking of final moments, just wait for the last page to get the fandom talking….
Matt:
This issue brings about an air of desperation as we see both sides go to extreme measures with Starscream willing to tear apart his own people to win. It adds a bit of a horror element within the adventure raising the stakes even higher. A standout is the way Optimus has gone through his arc of hating humans to now willing to sacrifice himself in a beautiful way. The arcs so well played out you can’t help but cheer.
The Art, Colors and Letters:

The artistic trio of Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer, and Rus Wooten continues to shine, contributing to the immersive experience of Transformers #4. The art and colors work in tandem to drive the action and evoke a wide range of emotions within a single issue.
The intense lettering maintains a nostalgic 80s cartoon vibe, providing a delightful touch for fans of the classic Transformers era. The distinct font styles for Autobots and Decepticons enhance the computer-like feel, creating a unique auditory experience for readers. The synergy between art, character design, and lettering is evident, elevating the overall aesthetic appeal of the comic.
Ken:
One thing fans can bank on with every issue of this series is the blockbuster action panels. Johnson kicks this off with a detailed escape chase between Starscream and Optimus. Even in vehicle form, the pacing never hits the breaks. This leads to a “crunching” image that is sure to get a reaction out of readers. As more classic characters get involved, the fighting gets more explosive at each turn. There is nothing but big wins with this.
The quieter moments bring events back full circle. With Optimus’ sacrifice, it connects with readers as a HUGE event. It also reflects the lengths he will go to protect and save lives. It’s a powerful scene but one other moment will steal the show. It is a full panel image that will leave some fans shocked at what has happened. It also foretells a grim future with the final page capping off a thunderous ride.
Matt:
The artwork continues to be a standout in the way this story is told. Continuing with feeling as though we are watching a cartoon they even add elements of deep emotions which can be hard to portray on a robot. The blend of colors is visually stunning and the fast paced action is never hard to follow it’s so delicately drawn.

Daniel Warren Johnson’s masterful storytelling, combined with the outstanding art, colors, and lettering, creates a comic that not only pays homage to the franchise’s roots but also sets the stage for exciting future developments. Whether you’re a long-time Transformers enthusiast or a newcomer, this issue promises an engaging and emotionally resonant experience in the timeless battle between Autobots and Decepticons.

With the fate of human lives at stake, Optimus Prime levels up the action and drama with another must-have issue. Johnson and the team present a legendary hero redefining himself as a hero through strong writing and intense imagery. The latter half of the book will have fans talking and rightfully so. Just when you think you know the story, the creative team proves there’s more than meets the eye.

this has been the best issue of the run so far. A triumphant page with a newly refreshed Optimus bringing the fight to the decepticons delivers the pop it so intended. The story has grown dire and the action is fast paced but never too over the top. Transformers have truly made their triumphant return into the pantheon of comic books.
