The Hunger and the Dusk, from IDW Publishing

In Issue 3 Tara continued to show her worth, intelligence, and (ironically) her humanity. She may have single handedly saved both human and orc-kind. She not only noticed the captured Vangol to have unusually dirty fingernails, but she was also able to translate a language that seems to be the equivalent of speaking Latin in modern day. While interpreting this “dead” language, so to speak, Tara was able to figure out that the Vangol are ambushing both orcs and humans by using underground tunnels. We wrapped up issue 3 by sending off a human to go follow the recently released Vangol.

The Story for Issue #4

We kick off issue 4 with a new song in the works. Previously we’ve learned humans have many songs mocking orcs and portraying them as evil savages. However, with the current peace treaty, and the The Last Men Standing suddenly finding themselves bonding with Tara (an orc), they’re rewriting those songs, in the hopes they can also rewrite their destinies against the Vangol. However, much like in our world today, not everyone can so quickly overcome their biases and discrimination for those who are different.

The orc tribes meet and discuss self preservation against the humans, verse their team up against the Vangol. All the while, our human scout, Mikil, continues to follow the Vangol captive that was released in issue 3. However, Mikil quickly learns he bit off a bit more than he can chew. On more than one level.

The Art

There really isn’t anything I can say about the art that I haven’t said in my last 3 reviews. It’s gorgeous, consistent, and moves the story along beautifully. The expressions on all the character’s faces fantastically showcases their fear, love, anger, or whatever they may be feeling in the moment.

The Hunger and the Dusk Issue 4 Rating: 9/10

This comic continues to be my favorite comic of the year. I love the twists and turns, while still maintaining the positive relationships of my two new favorite power couples. Nevertheless with the stakes suddenly higher, and the orcs not all on the same page, I wonder if our new human/orc couple will go from a peace treaty relationship with a hopeful future for all, to a Romeo & Juliet tragedy. Or will nature simply decide everyone’s fate first.
