The penultimate episode for season 3 of ‘The Walking Dead: DEAD CITY’ just dropped on AMC & AMC+, and it took an interesting and dark turn from last week’s Christmas What If? episode. We pick right up with the events that occurred at the end of episode 5, as Dillard walks into his bar to see what Negan did. As dark and unexpected twists continue, this episode left us with a shocker to set up the finale for season 3. No one is safe at this point.

Last Seen on The Walking Dead: DEAD CITY
Last week Dead City gave us an incredibly fun and insightful look at who Negan and Maggie truly are separate and together. While their paths never seem to cross romantically, despite heavily leaning into that, in the end they both seem like better people when they’re together. While this What If? episode was all fake, who they are still shined. Zombie apocalypse or not. They somehow both hold each other up, and pull each other out of their comfort zones. As the episode ended we see them part, and instantly fall back into patterns that are no good for them. Now as we snap back to reality… Negan has murdered again, and Renata wants to take him in. Unfortunately, Negan also accidentally took out one of Dillard’s beloved walkers.

The Story for “HOURGLASS”
Last week we saw Beth walk through the door of the bar, now back in Zombieland, we see Dillard do the same. He sees that Negan has murdered the guy who was stealing food, and talking crap about Maggie. Dillard seems truly sympathetic toward Negan about this murder. They’re Best Friends now! Dillard seems ok, until he sees his walker girlfriend is now dead dead. Negan insists Dillard leave the bar for his own good, cause Negan has truly fallen for this little apocalypse weirdo. The two of them have become like peas and carrots BFFs. Negan wants to protect him. So in true Negan fashion he does something messed up for someone he loves’ own good, and shoots Dillard’s other walker friend.
Dillard mourns his walkers
As a result Dillard cuts his own face, and tells everyone Negan did it. A man who managed to maintain some sanity (emphasis on some) by embracing a world full of the undead, has just lost two walkers he considered family. He clung to the undead to mourn the living, and now he clings to the crazy ass living to mourn the undead. Not wanting to listen to Renata, a voice of reason, he kills her. He then tells the Dead Squad that everything should be theirs. A group of people made for this world unleash hell.
Maggie & Negan
Before Dillard and his Dead Squad attack, Maggie tries to heart to heart with Negan. However, these two have gotten too close. They know exactly what the other one is doing. As Maggie tries to encourage Negan to walk out in cuffs, to save his life, she knows full well he’s not gonna do that. So she has a plan to drug him, and he sees right through it. He wants her to kill him, and take the credit, but she doesn’t want that anymore. Negan wants Maggie to run this place, because she would have done it right, and this situation would never have gotten out of control. As Maggie’s suspicions are confirmed, she learns Negan didn’t cut Dillard. As the Dead Squad attacks, Hershel comes to their rescue.
Dillard gears up to take over the greatest city in the world
We wrap seeing Dillard pull out his police uniform from the world before. Which almost seemed like a nod to Rick in season 1, as well as a way to show how far we have come from season 1. Dillard continues to fall into a dark hole. He’s dressed up, and ready for action as he pulls out his cop microphone, and tells Maggie she better deliver Negan. Otherwise he’s going to start killing innocent people. For Dillard there was clearly a fine line between fun crazy, and murder your whole family crazy. The line has been crossed that he can’t go back from, and now he needs to be dealt with somehow.
Final Thoughts
Dillard cutting his own face took me by surprise, but him killing Renata was a step further. The most unexpected deaths always seem to be the best ones. I really thought Renata was golden, but maybe I should have seen that coming. She was a voice of reason. My money was on Luis going before her. Dillard taking her out was the final nail in his no coming back from this story. It feels like he’s taken on an almost different personality, however, I think this was always who he was. He was just content before his walkers were put down. The things people do for love.
As we await the finale we see who lives, and who dies. With a season 4 of Dead City not having been renewed (yet), no one is safe at the moment. Not that anyone ever was.
