Halloween is coming, and with it comes Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil. While the twisted Mascot Horror Buddy kicked off the season, Cregger’s Resident Evil is poised to kick the season into overdrive for horror fans. Sony has been dropping a number of clips from the film including a fascinating one from Cregger about why the first person perspective for protagonist Bryan was important. Let’s take a look at the clips below!
FOR LOVE OF THE GAME
The problem with previous adaptations of Resident Evil was it’s focus on trying to capture the characters rather than the world itself. Cregger addresses that by making the audience a proxy through a new protagonist. For fans however, there are plenty of nods to the series. Cregger himself said “I happen to worship these Resident Evil games, and I tried to pull a lot from the experience playing them.” Austin collecting more and more items from green herbs to healing sprays seems like you’re walking into the games yourself – less prepared then any of the previous POV candidates.
THE ICONIC CERBERUS
Despite a desire to turn away from common source material, Cregger can’t escape some of the big bads of the series. The recently released clip shows off the “Cerberus”, the iconic security dogs from Umbrella Corporation, turned into hideous mutations. The clip however hints at a new design for the creatures pointing out that Cregger seems determined to teach an old dog new – and terrifying tricks.
These new clips are heating up the wait for Resident Evil, and with the film looking poised to deliver a completely different experience from previous Resident Evil films. Focusing on a protagonist who doesn’t have a previous game history removes the idea of people debating the character’s portrayal. Adding small nods to gameplay itself is unique, only previously done in Doom (2005) with it’s first person POV from star Karl Urban. Most adaptations focus on trying to make the world real and remove the game elements. Cregger seems to have managed to balance both.
