Michael Review: The New Way Of The Biopic

Published:

Get on your dancing shoes, everybody!

This new movie Michael, stars Jafaar Jackson as the icon himself. If you are new to Michael Jackson’s story, this movie gives a great overview of what his life was from the beginning, to his new young adult life. It stars Colman Domingo, as Joe Jackson and Nia Long as Katherine Jackson. Michael grew up with his brothers, Tito, Jackie, Jermaine (who is Jafaar’s father), Marlon and Michael. Joe was a steel worker, who worked tirelessly, but saw the potential in this group. The young actor who played Michael as a child, Juliano Valdi, was very good. I loved also seeing the famous Berry Gordy, played by Larenz Tate.

The Jackson 5 would be known everywhere, but, the main focus was on Michael. Many times I was in awe of his voice, and everyone kept saying there was that “something” he had. Indeed he had, because of all the accolades and success that he’s had. In the movie, they touch on a variety of things that was in Michael’s life. Including his friendship with his bodyguard, Bill who was played by Keilyn Durrell Jones. This movie also explored many of the the themes that Michael was most notably for. Miles Teller also surprised me playing Michael’s manager John Branca.

I had to also shout out Colman Domingo, who was the strongest acting performance besides Jafaar. He made me furious throughout the film, and he did his job well. I was really hoping for Nia to do well as well, but, I thought her performance was just okay. There are a few emotional beats that I did enjoy from her.

If you want your feet to tap, many of the beloved songs are within this film. One of the standouts in my opinion, is “Bad” and I, in general, love the Bad era. Jafaar’s performance is this is breathtaking, I literally thought I was seeing Michael. His moves, his look, and his charisma just gave Michael. You can see the progression as the film goes on, as to crafting a global super star. I liked to also see Kendrick Sampson as Quincy Jones. I wish that Quincy was here to see this film.

Some of the lower moments in the film, is that they literally forgot Janet. I was hoping to see her in the film, and I was surprised she was not. There was a lot of information missing as to what happened in Michael Jackson’s life. One other note was the pacing was really weird, it jumped from one era to another really quickly.

Overall this movie surprised me, and I had a really good time at the movies. Of course, this is not the end of the film. There is a second film that is going to happen, to hopefully cover the rest of Michael’s life.
