The Low Down
For those who don’t know, it was announced back in October 2022 that A24 was developing a “Friday the 13th” prequel series for Peacock titled “Crystal Lake”. According to ScreenRant and Deadline, the series is set in the 1970s and follows the events that led to the initial film, blending slasher and “paranoid 1970s thriller” elements. The series is run by Brad Caleb Kane, who most recently was the showrunner on HBO’s phenomenal series “IT: Welcome to Derry”, and stars Linda Cardellini as the famous Pamela Voorhees!

Murky Waters: A Look Back
As most longtime horror fans know, the “Friday the 13th” franchise has had a rather tumultuous history when it comes to being on screen. Between twelve films and several video games, any series with that history is sure to have its highs and its lows. The first of the franchise was released all the way back on May 9, 1980, marking this year as the 46th anniversary. Starring the late great Betsy Palmer as the original Pamela Voorhees, the film followed the murderous mother working to destroy the reputation of the camp that let her child die while trying to avenge his death.

From there, her son Jason would come back to life, die again, be imitated by a paramedic, then resurrected all before visiting the Big Apple, going to the Bad Place, coming back, and fighting Freddy Krueger. Oh, and of course, going to space. Then, in 2009, came my personal favorite, the reboot starring “Supernatural” favorite Jared Padalecki and Danielle Panabaker of “The Flash”. I wasn’t kidding when I said Jason’s history has been a tumultuous one!
Looking Toward the Future
Being in the hands of both A24, have a well-established history of horror over the last few years, as well as Brad Caleb Kane, there’s zero doubt in my mind as to how this series will turn out. Much like how “Welcome to Derry” has been confirmed for more seasons, I see the same happening here. With this amount of talent behind the camera, I’ll be more than shocked if this series ends up dead and drowning in the water.
