This non-spoiler review was made possible due to screeners from Apple TV.
The Godzilla universe continues to grow and get larger, thanks in part to Apple TV and Legendary Television, which is back with season 2 of the hit show, Monarch Legacy of Monsters. Season 2 picks up where the first left off, showing us the fate of Monarch and the state of the world. As a new Titan emerges from Skull Island, the ramifications will intertwine the past, present, and future of the characters as they face a new threatening event on the horizon.
Whispers of the Past
One thing that I love about this series is how we spend time in the past with characters such as Bill Randa (Anders Holm), Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell), and Keiko (Mari Yamamoto). Who were the founders and driving force behind Monarch and everything we learn about Godzilla and the Titans. Anders Holm may not have a lot of screen time this season, but Bill is the driving emotional force behind everything that unfolds in season 2. What Anders does with limited screen time is nothing short of incredible, as he fills his scenes with so much powerful emotion. The chemistry between these three continues to be a bright spot, and we do get some heart-racing moments as they navigate their love triangle, family struggles, and uncover more secrets of the world being built.
While I won’t spoil the plot, Bill plays perhaps the most important role in the events that unfold in this season. His research and his never-ending search for Keiko will blow the audiences’ minds with the direction the writers are choosing to take us.

Titan X
From the jump, we get a surprising amount of time with Titan X, who is this season’s “foe,” and if you came looking for big monsters battling, we even get a fun amount of that as well. What continues to stick with me for this series is how emotional and deep the writers and actors are willing to get. So much of this season revolves around grief, loss, and moving forward. While this is a show about gigantic monsters, its heart and soul lie within the actors and actresses. Ren Watabi (Kentaro) and Anna Sawai (Cate) knock it out of the park in their moments together. Whether through anger or sadness, the duo has you eating out of the palms of their hands.
Kurt Russell (Lee Shaw) still has it himself; there are a surprising number of action sequences with him featured in them as well. When it comes time to turn on the charm, Kurt can flip it on like a switch, and seeing him and Wyatt play the same character could fool us into thinking they truly are one person.
Final Thoughts
Monarch Legacy of Monsters Season 2 takes some incredibly bold swings in terms of future plot threads, and yet they work extremely well. This season is so powerful and emotionally driven that there are times I forgot this was a show about monsters. However, Godzilla and Kong get their moments in the light still, and this is a must-watch for Godzilla fans.
