The Recap:

*** Warning: Potential Spoilers Ahead ***

Dana takes her understudy with her to examine a sexual assault victim. Dana (Katherine LaNassa) and Emma (Laetitia Hollard) enter the triage room where the victim is sitting and proceed to start the exam. This sequence runs throughout the episode and can be very difficult to watch at times as the victim recounts what happened and tries to play it off because it was someone she knew who was simply drunk. Katherine’s acting in this episode truly blew me away because it is such an important and heavy topic, but from the jump, Dana enters a motherly-like mode and never pressures the victim nor makes her feel less than.

Dana not only makes the patient feel more at ease but also does so for Emma. Who has never experienced something like this before. Laetitia’s acting stands out immensely because there is a scene where she walks with the patient to get food, and when they return, the patient agrees to go through with the exam. This is the first time we see Emma step up, feel confident, and take control. The acting from the three women throughout this entire episode is so powerful and portrays the reality of these tense situations, down to even the cops forgetting to pick up previous evidence.

Meanwhile, Santos is working with the deaf patient who came in and is having an issue with the computer translator as their connection breaks up, causing a barrier in communication. As this is going on, we see Dr. J and Dr. Al-Hashimi talking with the parents of the teenager who was brought in. Dr. Al-Hashimi begins to have another panic-type moment, where we see hints of her breaking down due to something we have yet to discover. Dr. Moham is still convincing Mr. Diaz to stay at the hospital despite his fears of medical debt his family is incurring without knowing about.

The episode ends with the announcement of a cyber attack. To prevent it from happening to The Pitt, they are shutting down all electronic systems, leaving them to work off a whiteboard. Back to old school methods for the foreseeable future.

Overall Thoughts:

On the heels of an already intense and emotional episode 6 ending, The Pitt ramps up the heaviness by dealing with more real-world traumatic events. Not every ER visit will have physical evidence on the outside, and they do not shy away from the realities that many women face every day. On top of that, we see the real world fears that Mr. Diaz continues to bring to light: that healthcare is failing in America. Medical debt is forcing patients to decide whether to fight to survive, while leaving their family bankrupt, or simply choosing to die or live a life in pain.

We are nearly midway through this season, and there remains some foreshadowing with Dr. Robinivitch and his upcoming motorcycle adventure. The sweltering heat, combined with a cyber attack and shutting down systems, begins to close the walls in on our cast and the audience alike. Showing what makes The Pitt such an incredible drama.
