Dead and Loving It: The Story
Now, I’m going to be honest here: this was my first-ever Vampirella comic. Going in, I had no idea what to expect, and boy, am I glad I did. Everything here took me by complete surprise, from Christopher Priest’s storytelling ability to the expertly crafted artwork of Davis Goetten & Adriano Augusto.

Christopher, The Vampire Slayer
Being my first time reading anything written by Christopher Priest, what an introduction this was, as they absolutely killed it! Throughout my time reading, I couldn’t help but notice how “new reader friendly” it all felt. The relationships between characters were conveyed in an easy way to understand, the story was action-packed from start to finish, and the mid-story plot twist is good enough to make anyone do a total double-take! However, my personal favorite thing the Priest did here was to introduce the idea that Chaos is not a god but rather something with a god complex. Of course, as I’ve said before, you can’t have good writing without good artwork, and there’s no exception here.

Only Artists Left Alive
The art here by Davis Goetten and Adriano Augusto is near immaculate. I love the way that Goetten can capture a wide range of emotions in his work while simultaneously getting a ton of detail in a way that’s very stylized and action-focused, save for some gorgeous cosmic shots. His work is complemented perfectly by the coloring of Augusto. The colors and shading perfectly set the tone of each moment while helping readers focus on the action at hand. In no scene is this shown better than when we reach this destroyed cityscape. I was in complete and utter awe, and I think you will be too.
Final Thoughts
I now need so much more Vampirella in my life, and that’s all thanks to Priest, Goetten, and Augusto. These three seem to be obvious masters of their craft, and I need more.
