The Multiverse is Collapsing: Secret Wars Arrives in Marvel RPG

Published:

A new expansion is coming to the Marvel Multiverse RPG system this August. That’s the news that came down from Marvel and Marvel Multiverse RPG author Matt Forbeck yesterday.

The creative team of Matt Forbeck, Alex Irvine, and Matty Forbeck on writing duties and Brian Patterson on cartography, developing the maps, promises all sorts of new adventures. In conversations with fans on social media yesterday, Forbeck revealed that the expansion will cover the 1984 Secret Wars event and its sequels written by Jim Shooter, but will be more focused on the 2015 Secret Wars event led by Jonathan Hickman. Coming off the highly successful Avengers expansion, the Secret Wars expansion is poised to take the Marvel Multiverse RPG to the next level.

The Year of Doom

The August release announcement continues a string of Doctor Doom-focused content from Marvel announced or released so far, building up to this year’s December 18th release of Avengers: Doomsday. Previously announced Doom-Centric material includes the current Dungeons of Doom comic series that helps to serve as an epilogue for the recently ended One World Under Doom event in Marvel comics. You can check out Nerd Initiative’s review of Dungeons of Doom by Megan and me if you want to catch up on that event.

Along with yesterday’s Marvel Multiverse announcement, Marvel Entertainment added a visit to Latveria video to their YouTube channel. The video, along with yesterday’s Marvel Multiverse RPG announcement as well as the previously announced Doom 2099: Rage of Doom comic, 2026 is shaping up to be the year of Doom.

In addition to introducing God Emperor Doom to the Marvel Multiverse RPG, the Secret Wars expansion will offer players the opportunity to battle their way through Battleworld, the patchwork world ruled by Doom. Marvel’s release on the expansion reveals that the 2099 world, the zombie-filled Deadlands, and the irradiated lands of Greenland will be among the locations for players to explore. Hidden within the announcement is this gem

“The expansion also includes an exploration of the Fantastic Four, the Negative Zone, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and the vast Marvel cosmos and its cosmic forces, including new rules for how to handle Rank X characters of unbelievable might.”

For seasoned Marvel Multiverse players, this may have caught their attention. Current Marvel Multiverse characters are ranked based on their abilities at the moment that character exists. Rank 1 characters are rookie superheroes, think Peter Parker, the day he figures out he has his abilities. At the same time, Rank 6 are entities of massive cosmic power like Captain Marvel or the Silver Surfer. The press release, while mentioning new character sheets, also seems to tease the addition of an all-new Rank X character class. This would seemingly be the strongest of the strong in the Marvel Universe, with world-changing characters like God Emperor Doom in this class.

Finally, in addition to a new character rank, Forbeck and Marvel teased that Secret Wars will be the first Marvel Multiverse RPG to feature a variant cover. The Secret Wars expansion will feature a convention exclusive cover that will debut at GenCon in Indianapolis, Indiana, almost three weeks before the expansion goes on sale to the general public. The convention exclusive cover features beautiful art from Francesco Manna and Jesus Aburtov.

Stay locked in to Nerd Initiative as we inch towards Avengers: Doomsday. The team will feature all sorts of Doom-related content this year, as well as coverage of GenCon and the Secret Wars expansion release from me.
