This Review on the first 6 episodes of A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms is made possible thanks to screeners from Warner Bros Discovery and HBO Max.
We return to Westeros roughly 70-80 years after the events of House of the Dragon and 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The show stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall, and follows the adventures of him and his squire Egg played by Dexter Sol Ansell.
The series instantly has a different feeling and vibe than anything we may be used to when living in Westeros. We are used to royalty battling for the rights to the Iron Throne and a much more serious and darker tone. What stands out and sets this series apart is there is an air of light heartedness, and at times joy. This is what hooked me from the start. Admittedly I was one foot out on the franchise due to being emotionally fatigued, and the pilot immediately drew me back into the fold. Peter is a knight who is not as well polished as we may think of when we consider the knights of the realm. He makes mistakes, he often has no idea what he is doing, and he stumbles into the plot of the show.

He meets Egg who becomes his squire and instantly there is chemistry between the two. Dexter blew me away with his ability to hold his own against anybody else in this show. He brings seriousness and a lot of humor initially as well. When it comes to the action don’t worry there are some gruesome moments littered within the show. Episode 5 brings about some bloody and brutal moments that at times made me wince even. There are some cool techniques the camera does such as first person POV moments, primarily in episode 5 that I think fans are going to love.
This is a show that has a lot of heart and nobility within it. For fans that are looking for something fresh when returning to Westeros look no further as A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms hits on all of the elements that made us fall in love with the first series and then builds on it. The character development and writing is top notch as is the unique styles of camera work and action sequences.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms premieres Sunday January 18th at 10pm EST on HBO and streaming on HBO Max.
