This spoiler-free joint review of the first 9 episodes of The Pitt was made possible from screeners provided by Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO Max.

The Pitt returns with season 2, fresh off of a stellar 5 Emmy Award trophies and 13 nominations, where we return to Pittsburgh and spend a shift with American healthcare workers who face real-life challenges working in a modern-day hospital. The show stars Noah Wyle as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, Patrick Ball (Dr. Langdon), Katherine LaNasa (Dana Evans), Supriya Ganesh (Dr. Mohan), Fiona Dourif (Dr. McKay), Taylor Dearden (Dr. King), Isa Briones (Dr. Santos), Gerran Howell (Whitaker), Shabana Azeez (Javadi), and Sepideh Moafi (Dr. Al-Hashimi).

Dr. Robby is one shift away from being able to take his 3-month sabbatical, where he plans to take his motorcycle up to Alberta on a much-needed trip. Unfortunately, his last shift is on July 4th, where anything can and will happen in the ER as he prepares to hand off duties to his replacement, Dr. Al-Hashimi, as Dr. Langdon also returns after spending time in rehab for drug use (Season 1).

Spoiler-Free Thoughts

Matt: There is a reason this show is so highly touted as one of the best and most realistic medical dramas ever to have been made. Every detail is finely curated to ensure the most realistic experience imaginable. My wife, an ICU Nurse, fell in love with this series for this reason, and Season 2 delivers on the immersive experience and then some. While Noah Wyle is the “star” of this series, the standouts in season 2 are the surrounding cast. In particular, Isa Briones, Shabana Azeez, Katherine LaNasa, Taylor Dearden, and Gerran Howell. This core group has made this season so far, in my opinion, as they deliver every reaction and every line to perfection. Each member brings something special to this cast and delivers on the immersive experience that HBO Max is attempting to deliver. Whether it is Shabana playing a Med Student who is finding her footing, Gerran, who is a newly appointed Doctor full of incredible empathy and care for every patient that comes through, or Katherine, who is a long-time Nurse who has just about been through it all.

There is a special way in which they all feed off of one another, and their various personalities come together as the season goes on. There is an incredible amount of tension between Robby and Langdon coming off the events of season 1, which drives character development for the two of them. Of course, no shift is ever perfect as something always has to happen, and rest assured, it does, delivering methods of care we would never have thought possible. This season features new technology and challenges as well as moments of gut-wrenching drama. The way in which the crew thinks of every possible scenario, from stomach aches to lost limbs and beyond, continues to blow my mind, making this must-watch television.

Kat: A modern-day Medical Drama that has the right amount of complex cases, and still shows how the healthcare system is. The Pitt has it all. I went into watching Season 1 last month when TNT was airing it, not knowing really anything about it. After watching last season and these first 9 episodes of Season 2, this is the medical drama that we need to watch and use as a discussion point.

Matt also said it, the cast of characters, including the new residents, make this season and the show what it is. All of them together feed off of each other, and they work together so well. I cannot wait for everyone to see what happens in the new season.

Final Thoughts:

Matt: Season 2 of The Pitt brings back everything that made season 1 great and builds upon it. It is full of gut-wrenching emergencies, dynamic character interaction and development, and moments that will bring the audience to tears. The Pitt is the best medical drama of the decade.

Kat: The Pitt Season 2 takes everything from Season 1, and ups it 10,000%. The characters, cases, and patients are more complex, and everyone takes everything that is happening in stride. I’m so excited for what’s coming this season.

The Pitt airs Thursday nights at 9 pm EST/6 PM PST on HBO Max. The official video companion podcast will be available to watch on HBO Max immediately following each episode, hosted by Hunter Harris (“Lemme Say This”) and Dr. Alok Patel (“NOVA Now”).
